SALE OF THE WELLINGTON PARK YEARLINGS.

SPIRITED COMPETITION.

TWENTY-NINE LOTS REALISE 6652 GUINEAS.

The 14th annual sale of yearlings bred by Mr. Thomaa Morriu was held yesterday at Wellington Park. The. Auckland estate has achieved such wide famo for tho breeding of high-class horses that tho annual sale? never fail to draw a largo representative attendance, and the crowd of Jan. 3 :ouipared with any previous assemblage that has ever been brought together at New Zealand's celebrated home of tho thoroughbred. Unstinted hospitality was dispensed, Mr. Motrin having given tho caterer (Mr. Stilwoll) oarte blanche, and though the demands ol the assemblage were large, tho resources ol the commissariat proved equal to every call made upon it.

There were many well-known (aces at the ring side when tin important business of the day came to bo faced. When Mr. James Philwn took his pl ace on the improvised rostrum, attended by Mr. Henry Nolan, the Broil-Known form of Mr. G. G. Stead was one that could be picked out in a promi. nent place, the Southern sportsman, as usual, being in close proximity to the auctioneer Standing against the wall of the concrete stables, away to the right, Mr. Dan O'Brien might have been seen in cycling costume, and tho veteran's presence, it was quite recognised, betokened busmen. The Hon. Mr. Mosman took up a position in a secluded epot, whilo Sir 'Jeorgo Clifford could bo seen seated on a front form fringing the sale ring. Mr. N. A. Nathan and Mr. A. Davis were close handy, and Mr J. B. Reid, Mr. J. Cook, Mr. L. Do Peliehet, Mr. 1. Campbell, and Mr. J. Brabazon wero also in the same vicinity. Two English visitors in tho persons of Messrs. W. Niohol* unci A. Crocker nero present, and they stood in close proximity to the auctioneer. Proimnont amongst those scattered around the ring wro l Messrs. W. H. Hemes, M.H.R. T. Wilford, M.H.R, W. F. B auctioneer had nno to indulge in a panegyric on the family from which the youngster springe, 500 guineas was bid, and in leaps of 100 it went to 1000 guineas (Mr. Stead's bid), which was a Fignal for a round of applause. Off it went again in a bid of 100, and then an advance of another 100 brought 1200 guineas up. "It's against you, Dun," remarked the auctioneer, addressing Mr. D. O'Brien. Tho veteran racing man -camo again with 50 guineas, which was capped by Mr. Stead with an equal amount. Mr. O'Brien answered with 1550 guineas, and Mr. Stead quickly with 1400 guineas. The auctioneer made one more effort at a rally, but Mr. Stead held possession of tho field, and amid a round of cheering the colt went to him. The son of Hotchkiss and Rose of Wellington, who noW takes rank as one of tho highest-priced yearlings sold in Australasia for some years past, is a youngster of commanding appearance, and may be said even now to look a high-class racehorse.
