FIGHTING AT RENDSBURG. NEW ZEALANDERS TAKE PART. A BRILLIANT CHARGE WITH BAYONETS. THE ENEMY ROUTED. London, January 17. Reuter's message eays that the; Boers on Monday tried to storm a hill held by a company of the York-; shire Regiment and a few New Zealanders commanding their position near Rendsburg. The Boers, under the protection of a heavy fire, crept towards a low wall which sheltered the Yorkshires. j When the enemy's final rush was imminent, the Yorkshires did not wait for it, but leaping the wall j charged down the hill with bayonets. Captain Haddocks and ten New Zeaknders gallantly co-operated. The Boers fled, tumbling over one: another in their frantic efforts to escape the bayonets. Twenty-one were killed and 50 wounded. Lord Roberts, the Comrnander-in-Chief, in the course of an official report, mentions that the New Zealand Rifles held the hill at Rendsburg, a detachment of the Yorkshire j Regiment supporting. Sis of the latter were killed and five wounded. Major-General French subsequently complimented the New Zealanders, telling them that on all occasions their conduct merited the highest praise. London, January 18. Private Connell was killed and Sergeant Gourley died of wounds received at Rendsburg on Monday. Later details show that when the .' captain of the Yorkshires was wounded, Captain Maddocks ordered ■ the charge. ■ i 1

Capetown, January 17. Many of the Boers at Stormberg have gone to Colesberg. Wellington , , Thursday. The Premier has received a cable from the Agent-General, lodged in London at live p.m. yesterday. It is to the effect that the victorious charge at Slingersfontein, in which the New Zealanders behaved most gallantly, is officially recorded, and it is stated that Major-General French conveyed his cordial thanks to our men. His Excellency the Governor has received a, cable from the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain, Colonial Secretary, conveying the intelligence that the New Zoalanders distinguished themselves at Rendsburg.
