THE M ATATU A .—HEAVY WEATHER. The Shaw. Savill. and Albion Company's steamer Matatna arrived at Port Chalmers from London on the 3rd inst. A report of the steamer's voyage snv«:-The Matatua lelt for Gravesend at. 2.30 p.m. of October 3 for Port Chalmers direct, and anchored in the Downs at 7.30 p.m. same day. Left at 7.30 a.m. next dav, and passed down Channel: arrived at TenerilTc at 8.30 a.m. on October 11. and after taking in 400 tons bunker coal?, proceeded on the voyage at 6.20 p.m. the samo day. Had light to moderate north-east to south-east trades until she approached the Capo of Good Hope on October 31. when she encountered fearful weather. The gale commenced at south-west, and brought m> a terrific sea. in which the vessel rolled and laboured heavily, and constantly shipped terrific seas. At 5.40 n.m. of October 31, the vessel rolled to an alarming degree in the trough of the sea, and the course was altered to ease her. On the following dav the sea still very bad, and in the evening the heavy cross seas prevailing caused the vessel to pitch heavily. By November 2 the force of the hurricane had somewhat moderated, but threo (lavs later the wind shifted rapidly to the southward, and matters became more unpleasant,. Two heavy seas broke on board in onick succession, and did somo damage to the deck fittings. At 6.30 a.m. that, day some heavy weather was experienced, which caused the vessel to roll heavily. The vessel was again put head to wind, and rode somewhat easier. The sale, however, increased in violence, until a perfect hurricane prevailed, accompanied by a dangerous breaking sea. the decks being continually flooded. On the following dav the sea. was more confused, and the vessel laboured so beavi'v that the cargo in No. 2 bold, consisting of 400 tons of iron and a large quantity of case cnmls. shifted bodily, giving the vessel a decided list to port. The stanchions which kept the iron in tho middle of the hold carried awn v. consequent. upon the heaw rolling of the vessel, and it is anticinatcd that much damage has beep done to the cargo through this. The weather having moderated sufficiently on November 8 to allow the hatches to lie opened, the crew were sent below to trim the cargo, which thev succeeded in doing, and afterwards more iroderato weather prevailed until sho reached Hobart at 6.15 p.m. of the 27th nit. After taking in some 400 tons of bunker eon', she left Hobart on the 'Bth ult., and arrived at Port Chalmers as above.
