COUNTY COUNCIL MEETINGS.
HOKIANGA. THE annual meeting of the Hokianga County Conncil was held in the county office, Rawene, on November 22 at noon. Present: Messrs. Burr, Glover, uarmington, and Vaughan. The county clerk (Mr. E. McLeod), who presided, read clauses 78 and 98 of the Counties Act, 1836, also list of persons declared by the various Eeturning Officers to be duly elected to sit as connciUors for the several ridings, as follows:— lA'aihou Riding, Mr. Joseph Vaughan; Horeke Hiding, Mr. Edwin AVarmington; Taheke Eiding, Mr. George Glover; Bnweno Hiding, Mr. William Burr; Omapere Riding, Mr. A. S. Andrewes; Whangapo Riding, Mr. Henry Charlton Powell; Kohukohu Eiding. Mr. C. W. P. Seon; AVaipoua Birtins, Mr. B. E. Williams. Apologies for unavoidable absence through being out of district were received from Messrs. Powell, Williams, and Seon. County Chairman: Mr. Glover moved, •' That Mr. William Burr be re-elected chairman for the ensuing term." Seconded by Mr. Vaugh-.'.n, and carried unanimously. The chairman, on taking the chair, thanked members for the continued honour conferred on him. and proposed that Mr. Seon be reappointed this Council's representative on the Charitable Aid Board. Seconded by Mr. Glover and carried unanimously. Clerk and Engineer: Mr. Glover moved that Mr E McLeod be reoppointed clerk and engineer. Seconded by Mr. Vaughan. and carCommittees : Mr. Vaughan moved that the whole of tho whole of the councillors be appointed members of committee, two to form a quorum. Seconded by Mr. Glover. Mr. Amlrowes arrived and took his seat just in time to discuss the motion, which on being put was declared carried. This terminated business of the annual meeting. ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Council was held at 12.40 p.m. Present Messrs. Burr (chairman), Andrewes, Glover, Warmin&ton, and Williams. Correspondence: Incoming correspondence read and ordered upon as follows:-Re applications from Mr. J. Hardiman and F. E. Danaher for an increase of ferry subsidy. Mr. Andrewes moved, " That on and after the Ist day of January, 1930, subsidies be paid for ferry services as follows: Between AVhanut anil Opouoni, £4 per year; between Motukaraka and Rawene, £2 per year. Seconded by Mr. Vaughan, and carried. Re letter from county solicitor forwarding plans, etc., for the closing of road at Broadwood, also deed. Mr. Vaughan moved, "That the chairman be empowered to appoint a presiding officer at a meeting of ratepayers to ho hold at liroadwood on the 6th day of January next, re closing road." Seconded by Mr. Wiu'ininglon. and carried. Ee letter from the clerk of the AVhangarei County Council, tendering information re telephone extension and wire from Mr. Williams on the same subject. Mr. Androwes moved. " That Messrs. Williams and Jarvio be informed tho Conncil will endeavour to secure tile telephone services sought for, viz., Kaihu to Bluff and Omapere to Kawerua, upon receiving a satisfactory guarantee that the Council will not lie called npon to pay anything towards tho services required." Seconded by tho chairman, and carried. Re letter from Mr. Hurry, asking the Council to closo the road fronting section 9. AVaokn. Mr. Andrewes moved. "That Mr. Hurry's request bo acceded to, subject to His paying the cost of closing the road, and his complying with the provisions laid down in the Public Works Act." Seconded by Mr. Glover, and carried. Tho following letters were read and received: —Town Clerk, Parnell Borough Council, re endowment, intimating that the Conncil was in a position to give valid leases for 21 years at 5 per cent for all vacant sections. From AV. Driffcll. A. S. Webster, and S. Bacon, re "thirds." Re letter from C. Roberts, lion, secretary Farmers' Union, requesting the Council's co-operation in agitating for a speedier mail service between Auckland and inland settlements within tho Mangonni County, and the North generally. From Mr. C. T. Wallis, intimating that he had no power to allow a track through AVaione. From Mr. T. B. Hawkins, declining to give right-of-way through his property, un-le'-i tho owner of Onoke also acqniosced. Re i Idler from Mr. F. N. Harris applying for ; charitable aid. Declined. From A. L. Men--1 '/.ies. tendering his resignation as dog registrar. From Mr. William Webster, tendering bis resignation at returning officer for tho I HnreltD Riding. Received with regret. From I Commissioner, forwarding list of thirds outline: .luly. to be scheduled for expenditure and approval. Rd letter from If. N. Downoy. re niiuN at Miunniaimi Bluff. Deferred for Mr. William's attendance. From Auditor-General. notifying the necessity of keeping separate accounts for cemeteries. Committee Reports: Mr. Vanghan moved, " That the committee reports of the 13th ol October and 6th of November, bo adopted." Seconded by Mr. AVarmington, and carried. Road Purvey: The clerk reported that no reply to letter requesting the Surveyor-Gene-ral to undertake tho Omanaia Heads Road Survey, had come to hand. Applications from the undermentioned surveyors, viz.. E. Neumann. Harrison, and Foster. E. C. Cooke. and H. Monroe Wilson, were considered. Mr. Andrewes moved. "That, Mr. Wilson's offer of tho 23rd October, re surveying new line of ! r>r\d to Hnkiiinsii Heads lie accepted, subject > lo his supplying tho county clerk with satis- : factory pariiculars of the works he under- ; takes tn do." Seconded by Mr. Vaughan, and carried. Accounts: Accounts amounting to .EGO Os 3d were passed for payment in committee, which concluded business of ineoting.-[Own Correspondent.]
UAXGONUI. The annual meeting was held at noon on November 22. Present: Messrs. 11. Thompson, G. Wilkinson. Blen Matthews, Powell, J. Evans, and AV. J. Harris (clerk). Mr. H. Thompson moved, and Ifr. 0. Wilkinson seconded, " That Mr. K. M. Houston be chairman for the ensuing year." Carried. ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting was held at 7.30 p.m. tho same day. tho same members being present. Chairman: Mr. 11. Thompson moved, and Mr. G. Wilkinson seconded, " That Mr. Bleu Matthews take the chair." Carried. Orurti Road: Mr. H. Thompson moved, and Mr. G. AVilkinsou seconded, "That £40 be spent on repairs to Oruru Road." Carried. Obstruction to Navigation: Mr. J. Evans moved, and Mr. G. Wilkinson second, " That tho riding members see Mr. J. A. Snbritzky, re the obstruction at tho Awanui Whnrf complained of by letter." Carried. Finishing a Contract: Mr. G. Wilkinson moved, and Mr. J. Evans seconded, "That the clerk inform Messrs. G. and 11. Thomas that they must linish the contract on the (Jruru-Ta'ipa Road." Carried. Metalling: Mr. H. C. Powell moved, and Mr. H. Thompson seconded, " That tenders ho called for metalling the sqnare In front of Captain Subritzky's shed at Awaunl." Gum Licenses: Mr. 11. C. Powell moved, and Mr. H. Thompson seconded, "That the ranger be instructed to grant special liconses to all who can prove satisfactorily tho tenure of over 40 acres of land in tho Mangonui County." Carried. Mangatoitoi Uoad: Mr. H. Thompson moved, and Mr. G. V/ilkinson seconded, "That the clerk write to the Lands Office, and procure a plan of the Mangatoitoi Road, showing tho bearings and distances." OarBuilding a Bridge: Mr. H. Thompson moved and Mr. G. Wilkinson seconded, ro the application from Mr. O. Stanton, "That the Council take no steps to assist in building the bridee asked for." Carried. Cost of a Bridge: Mr. G. Wilkinson moved, and Mr. 11. Thompson seconded, "That the clerk prepare a nchedulo of the cost of the Taipa Bridge for tho next meeting." Carried. lioad Repairs: Mr. J, Evans moved, and Mr. 11. C. Powell seconded, " That Mr. Thompson bo authorised to spend £5 on tho Mangatoitoi Road repairs." Carried. Calling Tenders: Mr. J. Evans inovod, and Mr Q Wilkinson seconded, " That Mr. Blen Matthews call for tondera, returnable at next meeting, for repairs to and works on KaitaiaAwanui Road, AVest Coast-Huia Road. Victoria Vallev-Kaitaia Road, and tho Fairburns Road " Carried. Mr. H. C. Powell moved, and Mr J Evans seconded, " That Mr. Powell be authorised to call for tenders for urgent works between Mangatanewha Bridge and Ahipara." Carried. Typewriter: Mr. H. C. Powell moved, and Mr' I Evans seconded, "That a typewriter be 'obtained at a cost of £10." Carried. Signing Cheques: Mr. G. Wilkinson moved, and Mr 11. Thompson seconded, That Messrs. Thompson and Wilkinson sign cheques." Carried. Council Payments: Mr. G. Wilkinson moved, and Mr. H. Thompson seconded, "That in future all accounts be paid at the Conncil meetings." Carried. Place of Meeting: Mr. J. Evans moved, and Mr II C Powell seconded, That notice be given that next meoting be a special meeting, to rescind the holding of meetings m Mangonni, and if carried, _ that the following meeting be held at Kaitaia," For: Messrs. Evans, Matthews, and Powell. Against: Messrs. Wilkinson and Thompson. The motion was carried.-[A Correspondent.]
