BOWLING.

OPENING OF REMUERA CLUB GREEN FOR THE SEASON. The opening of the Remuera Bowling Club Green for the season took place on Saturday afternoon, and was one of the most successful functions which has taken place under the auspices of the club. Two rinks each had been invited from the sister clubs of Auckland and neighbourhood, and the invitations woro heartily accepted. A uniquo feature of the gathering was the admirable manner in which the buildings and grounds had been decorated. The grounds and pavilion were ablaze with bunting. It would havo gladdened tho heart of Undo Sam to see the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes flanking the handsome pavilion, while on tho front of the top storey these colours were lovingly intertwined, and crowning all, on the top of the building, as Kipling would say, " the bloomin' old rag overhead." At the pinnacles of the pavilion and throughout the grounds were placed at intervals pretty little bannerettes— Royal Standard of Scotland—in delicate compliment to the nationality of tha club's popular president I

(Mr. Thomas Finlayson). Tlio buildings were profusely decorated with ferns, greenery, and flowers, while at the two front gates were erected two handsome floral arches. This shows that the ltenniora bowlers are decidedly aesthetic. The Decoration Committee, to whoso tasto and dovotion to the interests of tho club this work was due, consisted of Messrs. George Court, A. Holden, Laxon, D. Clerk, and Moore-Jones. Tho president personally received his guests and welcomed them, and at tliren o'clock the assemblage gathered in front of the pavilion. The President said he had much pleasure, on behalf of the Romuera Howling Club, in giving them a hearty welcome to tho official opening of tho green for tho coming season. They were always glad to receive their visitors, and were especially glad that the weather was so propitious, but that, of course, had been fixed up ly the vice-president with that enthusiastic bowler. Captain Edwin. (Laughter.) There was one member absent from their gathorng that day whose enforced absence was >i natter of sincere regret. The opening this year was somewhat late, hut that was caused by circumstances over which they had no control. However, thanks to the untiring efforts during the past- few weeks of their indefatigable green superintendent, Mr. Laxon. coupled with tho self-denial exercised by members, all difficulties had been overcome, and he had now to invite the visiting brethren to play oil a green which he ventured to say was up to the mark in every respect. On behalf of the club, he had to thank the managers and members of sister i n w ' lo ' IQU i' 10 5* became aware that the Remuera Bowling Club's Green was in a backward condition, very kindly threw their greens open to the Remuera 'bowlers. Ho could assure those gentlemen that tlieii courtesy and kindness would not soon be forgotten. He would mention for the information of the friends and visitiors that the Remuera Club was progressing most satisfactorily. 1 hoy would have a considerable accession of new members this year, but had still room for more. In the inter-club matches last voar they \vere fairly successful, Ming tho runners-tip in both the pennant flag and tho champion fours. Their team also acquitted thomselves very well at " ailganui. Having lost the pennant flag last year, they had resolved this year to do' their best to regain it, and, judging from the calibre of the men they still had to represent them, there was 110 douubt in his mind of the result. (Laughter.) During the past season thero were several matches for prizes presented by their gonial vice-president nnd other gentlemen. With these few remark?, he would, in accordance with ancient rulo and custom, throw the "jack" across the j green, and declare the green open for tho season, and may that season he a pleasant aim prosperous one. (Applause.) • The usual match was then arranged, President s v.
