DR. BAKEWELL AND HIS ANTAGONISTS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— preparation of an articlo vindicating the position I took up in my Hide on " Nurses at the Seat of War" bos taken longer than I expected, as it has involved reading the whole of a bulky Blue Book of more than 770 pages, besides references to other works. In this article I propose to reply to Mr. Giles. As for Mrs. E. Nicol, she is not a person to be taken seriously. 'Mrs. Nicol would like to see me lynched. 1 have not tho slightest objection; lynching would at least free trie from tho unpleasantness of -ever meoting Mrs. Nicol in this world, and I ain sure I shall not meet her m the next. As for Tim Doolan—dear, delightful Tim Doolan— he think that any woman in the
world, except Mrs. Nicol, would bo otherwise than kind and attentive to him? With the finest and most charming manners in the world—l say it quite seriously—those of a real Irish' gentleman, to which years only give more grace and more polish, what woman could resist him? All! Tim Doolan, you little think how many aching hearts you left behind you in the hospital! But why did you say anything about my looks? I can't help being ugly, and I never pretended to be anything else, but it's too bad for a handsome man like you to touch upon my looks. What with Tim Doolan taunting mo with my plain features, and Mrs. Nicol towering over me with her intellectual superiority, I am a misfortinata divil.— am, etc., R. H. Bakewsll. Hobson-street, October 23, 1899. Where did Mr. Giles get the Latin verses with which his letter concludes? I strongly suspect that ho composed them Mmself, for the sentiment is not- what ono wou'd expect to find in a Roman writer. 1
