PREPARING FOR A BATTLE. Capetown, October 19. British cavalry patrols have engaged the enemy's advance forces in the vicinity of Actonhomes at Bester's, about 20 miles from Ladysmith. There were some casualties, but full particulars are not yet to hand. General White, who is in charge of the forces in Natal, is sending out supports. A battle is imminent. General Joubert is at Newcastle, and is also forwarding troops to Bester's and to Glencoe. The Boer commando at Vryheid is approaching Rorke's Drift. THE BRITISH WAR VOTE. London, October 19. It is estimated that the British vote of £10,000,000 will provide for 35,000 men beyond the number voted for. CANADIAN MEDICAL CORPS. Ottawa, October 19. Canada has offered to supply a corps of physicians and nurses.
