BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Tiif. ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday, when there were present: Messrs. Richard Hobbs (chairman), Muir, S. Luke, L. Bagnall, J. Blades, R. Fairell, J. R. Reed, and Dr. McArthur.

Chairman's Report: The report of the chairman stated inter alia that 1 the Drury School Committee reported the school closed for a fortnight, owing to the prevalence of measles. The proposed alteration df Michaelmas holidays at Waimato had been approved, subject to the consent of the school committee. Temporary arrangements with regard to teachers lad been made as follows—Miss Elizabeth Kelly, relieving teacher, to take charge of Pukcatua school; Miss E. R. Wilson, relieving teacher, to Driving Creek school, during the absence of assistant; Miss M. Kirkbride, ex-pupil teacher, from Onelnmga tc Mangcre, during absence of pupil teacher. Leave of absence to attend university examinations had been granted to Misses H. D. (Irani and R. Boweti, Messrs. N. T. Lambourne, 0. W. Williams, E. Wilson, D. C. Brown, H. B. Hughes, and George Brown. Report of Finance Committee: The Fi.ianco Committee's report contained the following clauses" Your committee recommend payment of the following accounts, which have been duly examined and initialled Board fund, 17 vouchers, amounting to £6430 19s 8d; building fund, nine vouchers, amounting to £154 14s sd. Your committee rerommend payment of the claim of Mr. W. M. Hay, £1 Is, on account of non-acceptance of his tender for alterations to Waiotahi Creek school. Your committee recommend that the adjustment of salaries of first assistant masters and infant teachers, for the current quarter, should be made according to scab based upon the working average attendance. Your committee recommend that they be allowed to defer for the present their report on proposed school site in Freeman s Bay." The repo.-t was adopted. Report of Teachers' Selection Committee: The Teachers' Selection Committee reported as follows—'" Tour committee recommend that the following appointments should be authorised by tho Board— Elizabeth Sinclair, to be teacher of Bivorhead school (in place of Miss Haselden, who declines appointment) ; Mr. F. R. Byles, to be teacher of Ruapekapeka East and West schools; Mrs. M. Plummer, to be teacher of Amodco Bay "aided" school; Mr. P. J. Hook, pupil teacher, from Opanake to Dargaville; Miss F. N. Hewitt, pupil teacher, from Russell to Helensvillc; Miss E. M. Morris, pupil teacher, from Opua to Russell. Your committee recommend that tho Pukeatua School Committee be consulted as to tho appointment of Miss A. A. Wrigley (E2) as teacher. Your committee recommend that the Parncll and Ponsonby School Committees be consulted as to exchange of first assistant masters. Your committee recommend that the Auckland City Schools Committee be informed that Chapel-street school is not entitled to the services of an additional teacher. Your committee have considered tho comparison of teaching staff with scale on the averages for September quarter, and recommend that the Board should continue to gradually bring tho staff into conformity with i tho scale." Charge on Accounts: A letter was read from the Minister for Education in reply to a letter from Hie Board, re charge' to bo made by banks for keeping accounts, stating that the Government could not take any action in t1.3 matter. City: It was resolved that the architect's report be adopted with reference to making a reduction in the weight of Indian clubs used by the girls. Newmarket: It was resolved that the Board cannot give the committee an increased grant. Ponsonby : It was reported that there had been a considerable waste of water at Churchstreet school on account of defective taps. It was resolved that the report bo sent to the committee.
