EARTHQUAKES AT TOKAANU.
RESIDENTS CAMPING OUT. [by TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] Taoto, Thursday. Communications have just been received • from Tokaanu by Forney's trading boat, stating that thoy have experienced a considerable number of earthquake shocks lately, i In fact, since the Ruapehu eruption, and Ngauruhoe's renewed and continued no- ■ tivity, shocks have been of daily and nightly ! occurrence. On Tuesday last, at ton minutes to . two a.m., an extra heavy shock occurred, which ; prompted a number of residents to leave their 1 bedrooms hurriedly, and subsequently camp ! lout until daylight. Some damage is reported j at George Blake's Tokaanu Hotel, one chim- ■ ney being thrown down, and another shaken 1 out of the perpendicular, whilo sundry I kitchen and dining-room crockery came to grief. There is no report ol damage sustained by other residents, but probably fuller information may arrivo hero by to-morrow afternoon's coach. The shakings appear to have been entirely local, and may be attributed to tho constant and peculiar activity of the volcanoes, especially Ngauruhoe, as the township is situated at the base of the mountains, between them and the edge of the lake. No tremors nor shakes aro reported from other parts of the district on the western or eastern shores, and none were experienced in Taupo. Ngauruhoe's activity is unabated. It continues to pour out a, considerable column of steam and smoke.
