MR. H. VOGEL.
[FROM our own correspondent.] London, Juno 23. Mr. Huiry 11. Vocf.i. continues, I am glad to say, to make progress in the literary profession. He has just received the appointment of editor to the People, a Conservative Sunday journal, the "weekly" of the daily Globe.
Referring to this further step in advance "Tay Pav" says in M.A.P., "Mr. H. B. Vogel, who has just been appointed as editor of the People, is an interesting personality. The eldest son of the late Sir Julius Vogel, who was at one time Premier of New Zealand, Mr. Vogel is quite a young man, and in appearance is a typical colonial, well-built, vigorous, and goodlooking. He began his journalistic career on the Encore, one of the organs of the variety stage, and since then has edited ft cycling paper and a literary review. He has more recently edited Messrs. C. Arthur Pearson's successful monthly Royal Magazine. Mr. Vogel is a prolific writer of fiction, and his novel, " A Maori Maid," which was issued by Pearson last year, met with a decided success. Mr. Vogel knows New Zealand and Maori life as. perhaps, no other writer of to-day does. He practised as a barrister out there, and was the friend of many of the chiefs, one of whom presented him with the talisman of Maori greenstone which he invariably wears at his watchchain. Mr. Vogel is a good conversationalist, and is distinctly popiular among his journalistic confreres.
