EXTRAORDINARY SHIP SALVAGE. A ship launch has just taken place at the yard of Bwiui and Hunter, Newcastlo-on-Tyne, under extraordinary circumstances. In the autumn of last year the steamer Milwaukee, owned by Messrs. Elder, Dempster, and Co., of Liverpool, ran on the Scaurs off Cruden. a reel ot semi-hidden 1 ocks 011 the east coast of Aberdeenshire. Divers who were sent down reported that there was a rock somo 30ft in length and Bft in height piercing the bottom of the vessel in the main hold. The idea of saving ike vessel as a whole was abandoned, but it was determined to cut the steamer at the after end of the main hold, the bulkheads in the stern division being. undamaged, and no water having reached tile engines. The method resorted to in severing the fore and after ends was by the application of dynamite, the successive charges being spread over a length of from 4[t to 6ft. The charges varied according to the thickness of the steel plates, which had to be torn asunder, and so excellent was the quality of the material that charges of no less than 1401b were required in order to burst the plates. Eventually the forward section of the steamer was left on the rocks, and the stern floated into deep water, being thereafter towed to the Tyne. and docked a. the V allsend slipway docks. Messrs. C. b. u an and Hunter (Limited), the builders vesSl - , we re entrusted with the reconnmi tif" 1! e , nv i lrd or wrecked portion and the lauuch of the vessel with the new vanl ,o !!f a tl, ded ' t00l! » la< ? After the usual survey her name will be restored in Lloyd's register as an oceangoing passenger steamer of the highest class.

AN INTERESTING ocean hack between TORPEDO-DESTROYERS. The following; interesting account of an ocean race between destroyers came to hand recently:—Two Japanesci torpedo-destroyers -> the Shinonorao and the Murakumo, the former in charge of an English crew and the latter manned by Japanese, are at the present, it would appear, racing in the direction of Yokosuka, in a desperate effort to defeat each other for the honour of their respective countries, fur, a? stated, the Shinonome is in charge of Englishmen. On hearing of the successful trip of the Murakumo . from Plymouth to Suez, the builders of the shlnonome, according to the Japan Herald, obtained permission from the Japanese Government to bring the former to Japan in charge of their own employees, with tile sportsmanlike object of overtaking the MuraKumo and beating her in a run to Yokosuka. mJIT(i, was thereupon selected, and . placed Sin'nnnnm m?™ 11 of a " expert officer.
