THE MOUNT EDEN RIFLE RANGE.
■■■■, TO THE EDITOR. _ | Sir, Your correspondent "Volunteer" in this morning's paper facetiously refers to my letter on the subject as misleading. Now, I can quite understand his desire, and no doubt it is also the desire of his confreres, to preserve, as far as possible, their privileges as volunteers, but it would be a pity if in endeavouring to do so they should have to descend to - mis-statements. When certain correspondence on this same subject appeared in your columns some months ago, the volunteers 'attempted to write down the complaints then made about the unsafety of the range. But; allow m" to inform " Volunteer," who appears to be of the number, that these complaints are not frivolous, and. so far as my own letter referred to is concerned, there is nothing whatever misleading or; exaggerated about-.'. it, as I am neither antagonistic to volunteering ; nor the fortunate possessor of property ■in the vicinity of Mount Eden.'Perhaps for some reasons the closing of the , range would bo regrettable from a volunteer point of view, but the safety of the public in a place of public resort . is paramount .As for myself. I will in future avoid Mount Eden when target practice is on, and with -."book and ' stick : and ' dog" ' will . wander - elsewhere to smoke'.tho pipe of peace.— am," etc.. . ; i ; 'iMay 6, 1699. . - WJ.M.'
