MORTALITY AMONG THE MANAIA MAORIS.

[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Coromakdel, Friday. Tiie mortality amongst the Maoris in the Manaia district during the last two years, has been very great, no less than 20 deaths having occurred in that period, out of a gross population of 180. At present ono native is in the hospital with consumption, and another is in a dying state at Manaia, In response to earnest solicitions the Government has promised to provide in the next Estimates for a medical visit to the settlement once a week, and in the meantimo to provide medical advice free in Coromandel, the Maoris to pay for their own medicino. Mr. Walters, the Manaia schoolmaster, is endeavouring to provide a Maori cot in the Coromandol Hospital. He hopes to accomplish this with tho aid of the European day schools in the district.
