PICTURES OF THE WAR IN SAMOA. A SPLENDID ISSUE, This week's number of the Auckland Weekly News contains a splendid series of illustrations, dealing with the Samoan war and a number of other interesting topics. A fine drawing lias been specially executed for this issue, entitled, " Lieutenant Gaunt and his " red cap" brigade clearing the rebel forts at the battle of Vailima," The picture is drawn from a description furnished by our special war correspondent, and represents one of the most thrilling incidents of the war. Lieutenant Gaunt is seen standing, sword in hand, urging on his friendly natives, who are engaging in deadly combat with the white-capped followers of Mataafa. Another picture shows Lieutenant Gaunt and the " red cap" brigade of friendly natives so successfully organised by him. The titles of the other Samoan pictures are as follow; — Officers and men from H.M.s. Porpoise, ashore at Apia; Matautau Point, on which the British and American Consulates are situated, and where so much fighting took place; graves of two Royalist sailors and others killed in action on Mulinuu Point; a Samoan stone fort; a group of British naval officers at Apia; American guard on Beach Road, Samoa ; Lieutenant Gaunt, leader of the Samoan Red Cap Brigade; and Gunner Gunn, of H.M.s. Royalist, and his smart crew. In addition to the Samoan views, the News contains illustrations of gumdigging at the Wade, a handsome set of views of the late Chrysanthemum Show at Cambridge, some choice views of picturesque scenery and comic illustrations. Altogether this number is ono of the most attractive yet issued, and those who desire to secure copies should do so without delay. Tho News is now on sale, and may be obtained of all runners and newsagents.
