BOROUGH COUNCILS.

PARNELL. Th« fortnightly meeting of the Parnell Borough Council was held last evening in the Council Chambers, Manukau Road, there being prosont: Messrs. Petford, Cozens, Gilmour, McCabo, Fitts, Briggs, and Friend. In the absence of the Mayor, Mr. Briggs took the chair. Balfour Road: Messrs. W. Frater and Sons, agents for Mr. .1. Hastie's allotment in Balfour Road, wrote in reply to Council, giving their consent to the sweepings from the streets being lipped on the allotment, so that they would bank up the road. Tho letter was received with thanks. Proposed Regulation of 'Bus Traffic A bylaw, dealing with the 'bus traffic, and framed by Messrs. Heskcth and Richmond (solicitors), was road. It was considered that the by-law did not meet the case, and further discussion was deferred till next meeting. I Mamikau Road: The Chairman said he I thought they should write to the Auckland ) Gas Company requesting them to havo inl candescent burners placed in the lamps in tho I main street. It was resolved to do this. Overdue Accounts: Mr. Fills pointed out ! that tho water accounts were £106 in arrears. j It was decided to refer the matter to tho ! town clerk, and if he stated that the accounts ' were still unpaid, to cut off the water supply ! of those who had not paid up. NEWTON. The Newton Borough Council held a special meeting last night at the chambers, Rose Road. There wore present: Messrs. Shackelford (Mayor), Stewart, Brown. Donald. War nock, Sexton, Smith, Brinsden, and Ami bury. On the night of the last ordinary meeting, a week ago, the Council came to a deadlock on the question of the minutes, which were not confirmed, and consequently no business was done. Tho Mayor announced last evening that the meeting was specially called to consider certain matters on tho order paper. A letter was road from Messrs. Devote and Cooper, on behalf of the City Council, objecting to a slaughterhouse license being granted Mr. J. Hawke until the provisions of tho Act had been complied with. Mr. Shackelford said the license had not yet been granted, and would not be granted until tho necessary conditions were fulfilled. It was agreed to reply to that effect to Messrs. Devon) and Cooper. Mrs. Faulder wrote with reference to the same slaughterhouse, and the Council's decision as to what alterations should he made. After some discussion it was decided that tho letter bo received, as in view of the resolution on the minutes no further action could be taken without notice of motion. The Archhill Bond Hoard wroto objecting to pay half the cost of maintaining the Great North Road running throuirh tho borough of Newton and the Arehhill district, but agreeing to pay one third. The Council decided that if the amount were not paid within 21 days it would institute a friendly mit in the Magistrate's Court to determine for what proportion of the cost, of maintenance each body was liable. Mr. Wm. Davenport, for many years & useful councillor, tendered his resignation of office by letter. On the motion of the Mayor the resignation was received [with regret, and the town clerk, Mr. Currie, was instructed to write to Mr. Davenport and thank him for his past sen-ices to tho Council, and to the borough.
