The postal and telegraph revenue for the December quarter of Inst year amounted to £109,758, being an increase of £10,861 over the corresponding quarter of 1897. The postal receipts were £65,119, and the telegraph receipts £44,659, as against £56 440 and £42,457 for the corresponding period of last year, giving increases of I £8679 and £2182 respectively. Stamps sold for postage realised £69,504, ! an increase of £8721. Paid nu ™ g bered 712,121, of the value of £26,232, « against 643,801, at the value of £24,634 in the December quarter of 1897, an increase of 68,320 telegrams, and £1600 in amount. Ordinary telegrams numbered 587, DM, u the value'of £20,605, showing ' "creases of 60,642 and £1622. deposits The savings bank deposits numb " e 63 770 for £767,051. and the withdraw s ; 54 643 for £798.658. an excess of with- ' drawals of £31,607. In the December quarter of 1897 the deposits Numbered 60J49 for 0777110. a nd withdrawals 49,683 tor £741*861, an excess of withdrawals of £ Money orders issued numbered 85,848 for £264,458, as against 80,477 for £249,888 in : the December quarter of 1897, an increase of 5371' in number, and £ 14 ,570 lnamomit Postal notes sold were 107,332 01 . £35,304, as compared with 101,702 for '■ £33,957 in December quarter of 1897, an .. increase'of 5630 for. £1347.
