SCENE IN COURT.

[BY TEI.EORAPH. —HIISSS ASSOCIATION.] Ciiiustcuurch, Thursday. At Lyttelton today Juo. Griffiths, charged with having stabbed Cecil Payne, on January 19, on board the Rotomahana, while on the voyage from Wellington to Lyttelton, was committed for trial. During the case, Mr. Donnelly, who was defending the accused, asked a witness if he had ever been convicted. The police sergeant conducting the case objected to the question, which, he said, was improper, and could only have been asked through ignorance. Mr. Donnelly replied hotly, and as the Bench upheld the objection, Mr. Donnelly said ho would abandon the case and report the matter to the pre per authorities.
