KAURI GUM MARKET. Thursday evening The stock market has shown a good deal of activity during the past week, and numerous transactions have been recorded. There has been a fair inquiry for investment stocks. National Banks are wanted at £2 5s 9d. New Zealand Insurances arc firm at late rates—sellers, £3 2s 6d; buyers, £3 Os 6d. There are sellers of South Britishs at £2 lis. Nationals sold at 16;, and are still wanted at the same price, but sellers ask 16s 6d. Buyors of New Zealand Accidents offer £1 ss. No business reported in Auckland Gas, but buyers of contributing offer £10 ss. Sellers of Thames Gas ask £1 19s. For Devonport Steam Ferrys buyers offer £1 18s 6d. The outlook in the country is not much improved, as the weather has not yet settled sufficiently to allow harvest operations to be pushed forward to any extent. A considerable quantity of grain is already reported to be damaged. _ The wool market in England, and the lontinent shows a slight improvement. Latest London cables advise a slight declino in wheat, sales of South Australian having been made at £1 8s for February shipments. from Adelaide under date Letter advices from Adelaide under date of 16th inst., advise that there is no material alteration in the market; prices may be quoted as 2s 5d to 2s 6Jd for farmers lots, and trado sellers 2s Yd f.o.b. or parce 8 at Port Adelaide. Deliveries are large, and the supply is fully equal to the demand if not greater, as many of tho railway sheds and outports are blocked for room. In Victoria reports show that very extensive business is being done. Merchants are busily encaged making shipments, both by steamer and sailer. Largo sales are advised at 2s fjjd to 2s 7d per bushel f.0.b., January and February delivery. Indications point to these prices being fairly well maintained, unless some change takes place, in London. In Now South Wales owing to tho country millers being anxious to secure their requirements before supplies go down to the shipping ports, prices are a shade firmer than in cither Victoria or South Australia, but when these wants are supplied, it is certain that prices will adjust themselves to the London equivalent. Now Zealand harvest prospects arc not so rosy as they were, as the bod weather all over both islands has materially altered the situation. However, with good weathor we should even now have a good average yield, taking the colony as a whole. The oat crops are now being cut in Canterbury, and wo hear of one or two small parcels being quoted, but it will be somo hmn before they call be ill as good condition for shipping as the old oats. Maize remains steady at about 3s on the wharf, with 0 fair inquiry. Sydney has again eased oif, and to-day's quotation there is given as 3s 4il. Flour is selling slowly nt last quotation. Advice- from 'tho Sydney tea market report that prices, which were considerably disorgank'd, while tho duty question was in abeyance, have now recovered to their old love's. Chinas aro in good demand, owing to the short supplies of Indian and Ceylon, and also a firming in prices in both these sorts. It seems probable lihat prices will now'bo well maintained. . Cable adiiees to hand to-day state that nco has 'advanced £1 per ton. Local quotations ring* from £22 d.p. and upwards, with good demand. Huron is in short supply, and pneo ex store stands at about TJci per lb for prime. The heavy fruit season has created a very strong demand for Mason's jars, which aro selling freely. , , Van Hoiilen's cocoa is still in short supply. Sago and tapioca are a shado firmer in price, and in good demand. liifilpacks aro rather short in supply, and prices are firm; also cornsacks. Supplies aro expected by the Rakino. Canned and dried fruits aro rather dull, as the fresh fruit is plentiful. Canned meals are still selling freely. Flax, is quiet, with very few sales being made. Prices on tho spot for good fair average quality range from £13 In £13 10s, and lower grades are almost unsalable. London cables dated the 22nd inst. advise that the tin market is very firm, with an upward tendency. Corrugated iron is also firmer. Potatoes are selling slowly at from £3 to £4. In the local proline? market the prices aro unchanged, as fellow:—Farmers' butter, sd; second quality, 4d per lb wholesale Eggs are 8d per dozen wholesale, and lOd per dozon retail. KAURI RDM MARKET. Tl.e following are our quotations for kauri gum for the week ending January 25, 1899: — Poor ordinary, which comprises weak and rough-coaled piece?, pickings and washed mils, £38 to £10; ordinary, meaning hard, roughscraped gum, varying in price according to the quantity of washed nuts, £48 to £50; threcquarter-scraped, meaning hard rangegum, entirely free from washed nuts, price varying according to size, scraping, and quality. £62 and upwards; East Coast, £71 10 £73; re-scraped. £105 and upwards. Arrivals for 25 days of January, 650 tons. The market is quiet, but the tone is better than 11 fortnight ago. Arrivals since the begnning of the year have not been so excessive as they were.
