TAXING ON UNIMPROVED VALUES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln youi issue of the 11th inst. an escellont letter anpenrs from Hugh Stewart, Captain K.A. As a settler of 30 years in lir. Thompson's electorate, I quite conour in all Captain Stewart says. Most decidedly the local bodies should have powor to delve all the rates and taxes they require from tie unimproved values, and thus encourage hitlers and others to improvo and beautify weir properties, without fear of extra taxes ® that account, instead og being detorrcd "7 fear of extra taxation. As the rates locally jjs now levied, one lives in constant dread. Why should the struggling settler be taxed locally on his improvements, to make roads sad bridges, etc., and thus raise the value if the absentees' 'and, without them having P®l their fair share? The tiling is radically f'ong, and a glaring injustice.—l am, etc., Olahuhu. George L. Thomson.
