London, November 14. The Compazine Generale Transatlantique, owners of the French liner La Bourgovne, sunk oft' the Nova Seotian coast after collision with the ship Cromartyshire in July last, are claiming 2,500,000 dollars damages, alleging that the collision was caused by negligence on the part of the captain and officers of the Cromartyshire.
The French liner La Bourgoyne, bound from New York to Havre, came into collision during a dense fog with the steamer Cromartyshire, on July 7. 1898. The French liner was steaming at the rate of 18 knots per hour at the time of the collision, and the impact was attended with fearful results. A great ho'e was opened in the side of the La Bourgoyne near the engine-room, and great volumes of water poured into the vessel. She sank in a few minutes. The Cromartyshire rescued 200 of the passengers of the La Bourgoyne by means of boats and rafts. The Cunt rd liner Etruria towed the Cromartyshire to Halifax, Nova Scotia. There were terrible scenes on board the La Bourgoyne immediately after the collision. The passengers and crew were panicstricken. The crow seized the boats, and pushed the passengers away with boathooks and oars. They threw terrified women from the boats, and cut away the ropes of the lowering tackle while tho women were clinging to the ropes. Thero were 726 souls on board the La Bourgoyne, and of this number only 31 of the crew and 170 of the passengers were saved, over 500 being drowned. Only one woman was saved. The sunken steamer La Bourgoyne was _ one of the Compagnie Generate Transatlantique, of Havre, a vessel of 7395 tons. She was built in 1885, her dimensions being 494 ft long by 52ft and 34ft. She was one of the largest and fastest steamers of the great Havre Company, a sister ship to La Gascoigne, and ranking for speed with such ships as the four French liners running to Australia.
