WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

, ] The monthly meeting of the Waiternata | County Council was held at the offices yes- ( terday. There were present: Messrs. O'Neill ' (chairman), Bruce, Mackay, Sinclair, Hat- J field, Wilson, MeEwen, Cochran, and Rey- } nolds. ] Tenders: The tender of Mr. Fv. G. Carrie, 1 £27, was accepted for forming embankment • and making culvert and drains at Northcote. 1 For the maintenance of the Cut Hill-Lucas : Creek Road for 12 months, two tenders— ] Wm. Marshall, £75; and Mr. Murphy, £20- i were received, and both were declined. i Finance: Monthly accounts amounting to < £445 7s 6d were passed for payment, making t the bank overdraft at date £1401 3s 4d. i Deputations: Messrs, Hobbs and Cain waited on the Council and asked it to call - upon Captain McGregor, the owner of tho J s.s. Orewa, to contribute half the cost of i widening tho Wade River at the lauding. < Mr. Hatfield was requested by the Council to 1 interview Captain McGregor, and report at ' next meeting. Messrs. Cranwell and Houg- ■ ham complained that the railway authorities ' in enlarging the platform at Henderson wero ] blocking the entrance to tho goods shed. It ' was resolved, "That the county engineer ■ wait upon the railway Department and : endeavour to have the difficulty re- : moved." Messrs. Bell and Hougham requested that a portion of tho Great North Road and Lincoln Road bo met- ' ailed. Tho Council decided to metal the ' former road and form tho latter. Mr. Man- : dors, in roply to a resolution passed at tho . last meeting, attended, and complained of the harshness of the conditions imposed upon him in reference to tho repair of tho damage done by his traction engine on this road. After a long discussion it was resolved to accept his offer to get out and lay alongside the road 300 cubic yards of good motal, with which the damage could bo repaired. In reply to Mr. Alhvood and others, it was resolved to metal five chains of Parker's Road, Waikumete, as soon as the funds wero in hand. Mr. MoNair asked for a road and bridge through lot 67, Mr. Buchanan's property, at Riverhead, at an estimated cost of £40. Tho engineer was instructed to report on tho matter at next meeting. In response to Mr. Banbardere, it was agreed to repair a section of tho Tilirangi Road at once. Northcoto Wharf: Correspondence from the Harbour Board was read, and the action of tho Works Committee in stating (in reply to the Board's application for a contribution to tho cost of this wharf) that tlio Council could not legally contribute to tho cost of a wharf except in waters outside the Board's jurisdiction, was approved. Inland Road, Kaukapakapa: The engineer reported that it was not desirable to close the road as asked for by Mi's. Aim Russell, bocause settlement in tho future might require an extension of it. Waimauku-Waikoukou Road: The engineer was empowered to attend to a section of this road complained of. Waiwera Roads: It was resolved to close an unused road running through the property of Mr. P. Bayers, and as it would bo solely for his convenience thai he be requested to pay £5, the cost of the proceedings. Wainui-Kaukapakapa Road: In reply to a request from Mr. E. W. Hawkes, it was agreed to connect tho Wade district with the Kaukapakapa railway station by defining a road on land near Mr. A. White's property. Waikumete-West Coast Road: A report came from the engineer stating that great damage had been done on a section of this road by Messrs, Bendall Brothors hauling firewood during the wot weather, and the Council decided to call upon that firm to repair the road within one calendar month, or pay the Council £10, estimated cost of the necessary repairs. In answer to Mr. Leyland, the Council resolved to ask him to mate an offer on the basis of the engineer's cstimato to remove the slips complained of on this road. Wormall's Road, Takapuna: Mr. Wormall again waited upon the Council to ask fcr another section of this road to bo opened up, fenced, and formed, in terms of an alleged agreement made five years ago. The minutes of tho Council, however, showed that there was no such agreement; but the Council decided that if Mr. Wormall would lay the culverts required at his own cost, it would provide tho necessary pipes. Huia Road: Mr. Marshall Laing wrote complaining of what he called a bog-hole on this road, where a few weeks ago a lady had been thrown off her horse and the animal crippled. This was referred to Mr. Cochran, to have the water-tables cleared out. The question of metalling was deferred for the present. The offer of Mr. Higham to clear briers, furze, and tea-tree, build two box culverts, and do other repairs on this road for £5, was deferred. Henderson-Waikumete Road: Mr. R. M. Heighton protested against the negleot of this road. The letter was received. Charitable Aid Board Representative: Messrs. Cochran and Wilson were appointed to represent the county at a meeting of delegates to elect a member to the Board on tho 23rd inst. Dog Tax, Mairetahi: Mr. Charles Newman again applied for payment of his account of £3 3s for the collection of dog tax some two or three years ago, but the Counoil declined to pay it unless compelled to do so by law. Main North Auckland Road: The Rodney County Council sent for approval a resolution asking the Government to take over the main road north of Auckland, ai3l chsge its maintenance to the general revenue of the colony, but the Counoil decided it was useless to send such a resolution to Wellington at present. Slaughterhouse: A slaughterhouse license was granted to William Horner, in respect of his premises at Holensville. Resignation of Mr. McEwen: Owing to his removal from Mairetahi to Te Puke, Mr. MeEwen tendered his resignation. The chairman spoke in high terms of Mr. MoEwen's services to the Council during his two years of < ffice, and said ho had been one of the most popular members who had sat at the Council's meetings. He would move, " That the resignation bo accepted with very great regret, and that the hearty thanks of the Council be tendered to the resigning member for his past services." The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr. MeEwen feelingly replied, and said he hoped that the friendships he had made in the Council and with its officers would last r'.-uch longer than his seat at the Board. Charitable Aid: Several resolutions passed by tho Rodney County Council, suggesting that each county should constitute a charitable aid district; that charitable aid and hospital institutions should not be worked conjointly, were received, but no action was taken.
