Sydvet, November 2. In" tho Legislative Assembly to-night Jlr. Reid, the Premier, delivered bis Budget. The revenue for the year was £9,282,000, being; £245,000 above the estimates. The principal increases were:—Land, £93,000; Railway, £61,000; Pnst Office, £15,000;; Customs, £57,000. The actual expend!-' tare was £9,475,000. or £83.000 above the estimate. It would, Jlr. {Reid, pointed out, be necessary to increase the expenditure) this year under the various heads. It wag estimated there would be required £9,681,000, while the revenue could onlyi be estimated at £9,433,000. Therefore, hel would regretfully be compelled to increase the taxation. The Government intended to reintroduce the measure doubling the probate duty, which the Legislative Council rejected last session. Tho balance of th<j money required would be obtainable by an; imposition of 3d per £1 on tea, by retaining the duty on chicory, coffee, and cocoa,, and by the imposition of £3 per ton on| rice. The duty on sugar would be retained,, while, articles in the manufacture of wliicE sugar was used, such as biscuits, jams,: bottled fruits, confectionery, and preserves,! would pay the duties enforced prior to June? 30. The Premier declared that but for the bad season, it would Have been absolutely unnecessary to impose increased taxation. He had selected duties which would not con-i fuse the federal question, as it was his deliberate belief that federation would be accomplished within 12 months.
