THE TURF IN ENGLAND.

RESULT OF THE ST. LEGER STAKES. DEFEAT OF THE FAVOURITE. By Telegraph.-Press Association.-Copyright. London - , September 7. The Doncaster September Meeting was continued to-day, The following was the result of TnE St. Leber Stakes of 25sovs each. For three year-olds ; colts, 9st; fillies, Bst 111b. The owner of the second horse to receive 3Cosovs, and the owner of the third lOOsove, out of the stakes. Old St. Loger course (about one mile six furlongsi and 132 yards). Captain Greer's eh c Wildfowler, by Gallinute—Tragedy 1 Mr. W. J. Larnach's cb o Joddah, by Janissary—Pilgrimage 2 Mr. A. Belmont's ch c Bridegroom n., by Rayon d'Or—St. Bridget 3 I Though the defeat of the favourite in a classic race has invariably a dash of the sensational about it, the downfall of the Derby winner Jeddah at Doneaster will hardly take rank amongst celebrated surprises. "A fair colt, but no more," was the remark made by a leading writer when referring to'Jedtiah's Derby victory, and it was not hard to discover that a general opinion entertained regarding the son of Janissary was that he had been fortunate in striking a year when the opposition was extremely moderate. Though Jeddah had been favourite for the St. Legor ever since ho won tho Derby, ho had not become what would bo termed a red-hot favourite, as the last cablegram slated that he was at 5 to 2 against in the betting. The winner, Wildfowler, is an Irish-bred colt, that showed a fair amount of form last sraeon, winning, as he did, three times out of his five attempts as a two-year-old. Wildfowler made his debut in the Plantation Stakes run at the Newmarket June Meeting, but Ida maiden effort was an indifferent third. However, when the Doncaster September Meeting rolled round, he was in better fix, and, starting favourite at 5 to 4 for tho Rous Plate, ho beat his 11 opponents in easy style. In the Autumn Breeders' Foal Plate at Manchester Wildfowler divided favouritism with The Wyvern, and they finished first and third respectively, with Nun Nicer (who won the One Thousand Guineas this season) sandwiched between them. In the fame month, at Newmarket, Wildfowler was found to be still in the winning vein, and starting for the Rutland Stakes with odds of 3 to 1 laid on his ability to win, ho easily defeated those pitted against him. The Irish-bred colt, however, Has not destined to go into retirement at the end of the season without having another defeat registered against him, and in the Middle Park Plato he finished third to Dioudonne and Disraeli. Wildfowler was regarded a< a most promising roll, and he was well backed for the Derby, but something evidently wont wrong with him in his training, as he was struck out of (ho blue riband consort a few days before the race came to bo decided. The fact of Wildfowler having been held in good esteem for the Derby would lead to the supposition that his party hud some idea of his taking a prominent hand ill the settlement of the St. Legor. and when the details,of the race come to hand it will probably be found thai the victory of Captain (brer's colt cost the ring a good few thousands. Wildfowler, it is worthy of remark, was trained by ,1. Darling, who last year trained the triple crown hero, Galtee More. The St. I.eger Slakes was instituted in 1776, so that this year's contest marked tho 112 th that has taken place. Tho following is a list of the winners sinco 1863:-—
