PROPOSED EXTENSION OF HOBSONSTREET WHARF.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l noticed at the last meeting of the Harbour Board that a motion is to bo brought forward in favour of the extension of Hobsonstreet Wharf in a northerly direction, such extension to be solid. Would it not be cd 'isable, before entering on such an expensive undertaking, to get some expert opinion 011 the probable effect 011 the depth of water. at the other wharves? There is little doubt thai thu reclamation to the right of the Railway Wharf, by stopping the scour of the tide, lias silted up Mechanics' Bay to a very consider able extent. Owing to the reef between t' e Watchman and l'onsonby, the set of the tide is already away from this side of tho harbour, and any embankment thrown out at right angles to its course from here will only intensify the evil, and entail endless expense in dredging between oui present wharves, If we are to have any water there at all.l am, etc., Igxotcs.
