ORCHESTRAL UNION CONCERT.
AT the Choral Hall last night there wis» good attendance of the public at the second concert of the ninth season given by the Auckland Orchestral Union. It opened with SvK, rend e. rin g of Auber's "La Sirene" »«,S?t' 'II whlcll tn excellent tone and ,»mi .1 by the violins was » special feature, wnue the remaining executants deserve praise ror the way in which they interpreted i..dj music. Tho lovely "Andante con mow movement, from Mendelssohn's stmnyitaban symphony, was very effectively played. The unison phrase was firmly given oat at tin commencement, and the principal theme «M announced by the wood-wind baud and violas in a manner tba* revealed with distinctness the rare beauty and tender charm ft Iff composition. The violins, too, were M.aaltf successful when their turn came to repeat t?» same subject, while verv effective rt\ »*, factory was the manner in which the elaborate accompaniment for the wood-wind executants was realised. The second melody was admirably brought out. The bright, joyous strains from the clarinets, reinforced by «« flutes, shone out distinctly, and lent ffiucn charm to the general interpretation. A: JM close the band was warmly applauded, -mward German's " Gipsy Suite" was creditably executed, the " Valse Melancolique" being '«• most successful of the four performed, sir A. Sullivan's " Di Ballo" overture was only fairly well rendered. The violins were always strictly in tune, and at timesr.tw» was a want of unanimity as regards iw tempo. I'onchielli'a composition, "Dance »' the Hours," was played with marked emphasis and good phrasing, but toward* 'IK finale there was a want of resoluteness, m the intonation was not good. Miss 11. iw sang with taste. "The Snow that Husjew ■Ml," and, in reply to a recall, responded « i At the Fountain." She was also heard w advantagr in Denza's "May Morning-. -«:- TV. M. Quinn's fine baritone voice was near" successfully in Poniatowski's lad, ■■• (W. Yeoman's Wedding Song," and .™ a " Bedouin Love Serenade."
