INSTITUTE FOR THE BLIND
A PLEA FOR GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. [BY TEI.ECIIAI'II.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. A meeting of the Auckland members of the Legislative Council and House of Representatives was held this evening for the purpose of considering the advisability of approaching the Premier with the object of getting a sum of £5000 placed on the Estimates for the purpose of erecting the main building of the Institute for the Blind, at Pamell, in brick. Mr. La-wry, who got the members together, presided, there being also present: The Hons. T. Thompson, J. Carroll, D. Pinkerton, B. Harris, W. Kelly, W. Jennings, 11. Williams, and W. Swanson, and Messrs. Holland, Houston, and Kaihan. Apologies were received from Messrs. Massey, It. Thompson, Ilerries, Crowther, and Bollard. The Hons. T. Thompson, J. Carroll, and Mr. Holland spoke of the good work which the institute was doing, and thought that assistance should, if possible, be given. On the motion of Mr. Jennings, a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Lawry, Holland, Houston, Herries, and Jennings, was appointed to draw up a resolution, to be submitted to the Government, air] to make arrangements for a deputation to the Premier on the subject. All the gentlemen whose names have been men tioned are in full sympathy with the pro- j posal.
