THAMES NEWS.

[BY telegraph,— correspondent.] Thames, Monday. The Foresters' Sports Mooting, on Easter Monday, promises to be a great success, as capital entries have been received for all tho events. There are a good many entries from Auckland athletes and cyclists.

A Thames representative team of cricketers is to proceed to Paeroa on Saturday next, to play against Ohinemuri's representative team. The Thames will be represented by tho following players :— Adams, Carraicbael, Carter, Barrow, Pratt, Pearce, Wilkinson, Rudkin, A, Lang, J. Buclian, and A. Caple; emergency, G. W. Clark.

The Assessment Court, for the hearing of objections to the valuations of property within the Thames borough, was hold today, Mr. R. S. Bush, S.M., presiding. Few reduction! were made, but in the majority of instances the valuer's (Mr. T. W. Clark) assessment was sustained. One rather important point arose daring the sitting, viz., whether certain allotments belonging to the Thames Harbour Board, which were not within the borough boundary, were exempt- from valuation. Mr. Bruce, secretary of the Harbour Board, said that the borough only had jurisdiction over land above high-water mark ; but Mr. Miller, who appeared oil behalf of the valuer, contended that the jurisdiction of the borough extended to low water mark, and that though the land belonged to the Harbour Board, the borough could rate it. _ Mr. Bush said he thought that the ordinary foreshore would be exempt from rating, but eventually he reserved his decision.

The Advocate states that the crops in the Taieri are turning out particularly well, and that a wheat buyer in the district is snapping up all he can get at 4g 6d per bushel. One grower refused 4s 8d on the railway trucks for his wheat. The Victorian yield of gold during February was 61,8510z, an increase of 12,1M0z over February last yen. For January and February together the yield was 105,6110z, or 28,2680z more than in the OQrrespondiug two months pf 1837.
