DEVONPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the above Council held last night was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. C. Macky) and Messrs. O. Mays, R. Under, Mitchell, Dunning, Handley, Brooks, and Creeth.
Standard Survey of the BoßoooH.-Re-garding the communication to the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands to the effect that the standard survey of the Borough could not be carried out at the Government's expepse, it was stated that what Ihe Council proposed was that the Government should pay half the expense. It was agreed that the Mayor should give the matter his attention.

Inspection of Dairies.—ln accordance with notice of motion the Mayor moved, " That in order to obtain a thorough inspection and regulation of all dairies selling milk within the borough, the Council do at once apply to the Colonial Secretary to have Devonport added to the contributing Board appointed under the Order-in-Council made on tlio 9th December, 1895." The motion was reconded by Mr. Mays, who mentioned that he had moved in the same direction some years back, but the motion was not accepted with favour. After discussion the motion was carried.
The Gas Company.—While the question of the appointment of a valuer was being considered, the valuation of the Gas Company's property was mentioned. Complaint was made that a considerable damage was done to the roads by the Gas Company, and it was held that the Council should first be applied to, as it was a question whether the charter held by the Gas Company was intended to include the Borough of Devonport, Appointment of Valuer.—Mr. J. Mays was re-appointed valuer of the borough, on the same terms ns laat year. Tun Drainage Souemb.—ln connection with the drainage scheme, the tenders for checking thu present levels of the borough were opened and considered. Nine tenders were received. A letter was read from Mr. Norman Prentice, who expressed the opinion that the data as to levels which would be supplied would only be accepted as provisional, as competitors for the drainage scheme would have to check all the levels, as every portion of the borough would have to be gone over, aud the Council would eventually have a correct record ot the levels of the borough. After discussion it was decided to accept the .tender of Mr. J. Harrison.
