HOPES OF A SETTLEMENT.

London, December 14. Me. Ritohie declares that he is hopeful of a satisfactory termination of the strike in the engineers' trade, since only a difference of phrases separates the disputants. If the Conference fails, lie adds, thirty additional firms will join the lockout, • London, December 15. The prospects for a satisfactory termination of the conference between the delegates of the Employers' Federation and the representatives of the engineers, have improved. A ballot of engineers, with regard to the acceptance of the employers' proposal, has resulted—7s2 voting for acceptance, and 68,966 against.' 1 : Later; | The prospects of a satisfactory issue of the conference are still improving The employers are not averse to a more conciliatory definition of their pro posals, and [a small joint committee is seeking to bring about a reconciliation of the employers' claims to freedom of management with the unionists' claims to collective bargaining. : .
