THE CRICKET SEASON.

ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP . . MATCHES CONTINUED. ?INE SCORING BY THE UNITED AND V NORTH SHORE. .. - WYNYARD THE FIRST CENTURY .»y SCORER. - ' . ' Che championship matches in the various grades under the auspices of the Auckland Jricket Association, which were broken in ipon on Saturday, October 30, by the Cycling Club's carnival, were resumed at the Domain and North Shore grounds on Saturlay last. The weather, though somewhat hreatening, held up, and the keen southerly ireeze rapidly dried up the wickets, vhicli, had it not been for the rain early n the morning, would have been fib to lava batted for a kingdom on. Even as it vas, they' may be safely set down as batsnen'a wickets, and as a natural consequence his, together with the opportunity that has ieen _afforded for practice during the past ortnieht, brought about some taller scoring han had marked the initial matches. There' vas a very fair attendance, including a lumber of ladies, and afternoon tea was irovided by the lady, friends of the Jordon.', Club. The United Seniors, in heir match ' against . Gordon, havo comriled.. the ; fine. score, of ■ 259. for a loss of line wickets,' aud the North Shore Club, ilaying against ; the 'Auckland' Fifteen at Jevonport, have put together 205 for the loss if a similar number of wickets. The batting if tho Auckland Eleven against Parnell ipened fairly well, but collapsed badly, seven vickets falling for the surprisingly low score if . 8 runs., Details of the matches are appended :— SENIOR COMPETITION. • United v. Gordon. ■ l United went ' first to the wickets, ami cept the Gordonites busy leather-hunting throughout the whole ■of • the alterioon, reaching the splendid total of !59 runs for the loss of nine wickets. '. Marshall, 78 (not out), was the principal •tin . getter, and although not a faultless nnings, it was a fine one, the United man flaying sound and. pretty cricket. D. Hay vas responsible for 42, and although lie hit iut vigorously, his display was a somewhat ucky one, two or three chauces being given. 1 Hay was the only man against whose name ;he dreaded cipher was entered, the majority if tho others running into the other side of he twenties. Ihe ground fielding of the iordonites was poor and the catching ditto. \elly, who trundled so destructively against tfortli Shore, in the initial match, sent down io less than 31 overs, capturing the whole line wickets for an average of about 13 runs iViece. Kissling did not come off at all, lending down 41 overs without a wicket. IVitli the exception of Stemson, who was mt lb\y, the whole of the United men wero aught out. United.—First Innings. l). Tho North Shore skipper winning the toss elected to bat, and they kept the Auckland team after the leather the whole afternoon, putting up the fine score of 205 for the loss of nine wickets. Toward this total the exAucklander, W. T. Wyudard, mado the splendid score of 101, his innings being a fine display of free hitting, given with only one ohanco when his score stood at 40. T. Ball, when he had made 26; received a severe knock on the head from a return of Wynyard's, and had to retire, but will be allowed by the Auckland skipper to finish his innings next Saturday. The other double figure scores wero G. Mills 23, Warren 14, and Bullcr 18 not out, all ot whom played careful cricket [or their runs. The fielding of the Auckland team except in . one or . two cases was very, ;ood. " Lundon, who took five wickets for 48 ind Stevonson two for 30, proved the most Jestructivo bowlers. Lundon, who bowled ivitli good judgment, kept a fine longth right through, and was the only bowler to keep the runs down. The Aucklander.? again made a disappointing display, their, first effort only realising 91 rnns, the batsmen, with the exception of T. Neill (33), D. Clayton (23), and Holland (20), doing literally nothing, eight wickets only adding eight runs, while four of the batsmen were retired to the pavilion without a single to their credit. Resteaux, for Parnell, accounted for seven Auckland wickets for a total cost of 38, and Brierly took 3 for 8.
