CONFESSIONS OF A SOFT-HEARTED
CROYDON BUTCHER. At the sitting of the Croydon Bankruptcy Court, Mr. Abraham Spooner, butcher, St. Paul's Cray, came up for hie public examination. The Assistant Official Receiver (Mr. T. W. J. Britten): Now, Mr. Spoooer, according to your preliminary eiamination you partly attribute the cause of your insolvency to ill-health? Debtor: Yes, and bad meat. (Laughter.) Registrar: From what disease were you suffering, Mr. Spooner? Debtor: Heart, or rheumatic (ever. The Assistant) Official Receiver: Did you ever complain to Mr. Griffin, a creditor, that you were getting into difficulties owing to the meat? Debtor: No, but I did to his daughter. The Registrar: What age was the daughter? Debtor: I won t be eure, but I think she was twentytwo. (Laughter.) The Registrar: How do you know she was twenty-two ? Debtor: Because she told me so. The Registrar: Why did you ask her what her age was? Debtor (blushing): Because I thought oj making her my wife. (Laughter.) The Registrar: Your heart was good enough for that. (Laughter.) Debtor: Yes sir (More laughter.) The Registrar: Were things improving when you were going to take a wife? Debtor: I was just turning myself. The Registrar: You were going to get) somebody else to turn (laughter)—and, of course, it was the poor young lady who was to have done so. In reply to other questions, debtor said he was twenty«oor yean of age, and " killed" at home for his father. The Registrar How long have you been in business with your father? Debtor: Well, about) twenty-two years. (Alauph.) The Registrar: You don't sugen you began to "kill" directly you were •orn, do you ? (Laughter.) Because you have just said you were only twenty-four years of age. (Laughter.) , Debtor: No, sir; I started when I was twelve years old. The Assistant Official Receiver: When were you to have got married! Debtor: well, Urer on. (Laughter.) The Registrar: When be was indulging in life's young idream, at all events, (Laughter.). Debtor went on to uy that he should nod have been; in the Bankruptcy Court if it had not been for the Udy.
