WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
♦ [by telegraph.— correspondent.] Wellington, Thursday, * THE GOVERNOR'S RECEPTION. It appears that the captain and officers of Her Majesty's ship Pylades received no invitation to attend the recent reception. Nevertheless the yards were manned and the salute fired. The City authorities were blamed for the omission. The officers of the Pylades had no official knowledge of the arrangements. This is the explanation of the fact that there was no representation of the Royal Navy at the landing, Another error was that the present French Consul was not invited, the card of invitation having been addressed to his predecessor. The City authorities made the necessary amende this morning by explaining that the omissions and errors were purely the consequence of inadvertence, and the desire to keep the times already fixed for Hie Excellency's landing and arrival at Parliamentary Buildings and Government) House. UNCHARTED ROCKS. A rumour has been in circulation to the effect that the rocks on which the Tasmania met her fate are not in any known charb, and that, this circumstance was known to the Marine Department for two years. The Marine Department this afternoon gave an emphatic-denial to the rumour. . LETTER FROM LORD SALISBURY. The following letter, addressed by Lord Salisbury to the Premier, is published.
