MEETING OF ONEHUNGA RATEPAYERS.

A MEKTINQ of ratepayers was held last night in the lodge room of the Public Hull, Onehuuga. Among those present were Messrs. C. C. Fleming, J. Stoupe, S. Bradley, H. Phillipson, G. J. Jackson, G. Inglie, and others. Mr. J. Laking, who was voted to the chair, read apologies for their absence through sickness and previous engagements from Messrs. D. A. Sutherland, D. Neilsoe, and W. Dimwoodio. The Chairman stated that the object of the ineetinß was to present a requisition which appears in our advertising columns) to Messrs. John Rowe, Charles (/. Fleming, and John Stoupe, asking them to consent to be nominated for the annual eleotion of Counoillore in September next. In presenting the requisition to the abovenatned gentlemen, the Chairman informed the meeting that it contained 111 signatures, representing 150 votes, and that itwae signed by representatives of all shades of politioal opinion in Onelmnga. Mr. Kowe, who was unavoidably absent from the meeting, hadpven mi written consent to accede to the wishes of the people, and he had also expressed the hope that Messrs. Fleming and Stoupe would do likewise. Messrs. G. J. Jaokson, G. Brown, and W. Bray also spoke in support oJ the requisition, and the latter stated that many others who had not signed the requisition had signified their intention to support Messrs. Kowe, Fleming, and Stoupe if they wor« nominated. In reply, Mr. Fleming acknowledged the honor of being asked by so many ratepayers to become one of their representatives, and while he waa not anxious to enter the tounoil, yet he felt it to be his duty to do the best he could for the town in whioh be had resided for forty years. _ Mr. Stoupe also spoke to the same effect, And consented to be nominated with Messrs,

Rowe and Fleming. Mensre. J. Rowe, E. Burden, and P. MeKenzio retire from the Counoil next month through effluiion of time, and the election of three new members will take place on the 9th of September next.
