Captain Akgall arrived from Wellington by the Takapnna yesterday morning, - Captain Morrison, late of the brigantine Stanley, leaves for Sydney by the Tasmania to-day, to assume command of the barque Fido.

The death is announced of an old resident of Hokitika in the person of Mrs. George O'Connor. The deceased arrived in Hokitika in 1865. Mr. Frank Arnold, of the Railway Department, Lyttelton, has been transferred on promotion to Palmerston North, where he takes up the duties of chief clerk. Tamahaa Mahupuku of the Wairarapa, who recently borrowed £18,000 from the Public Trustee, is endeavouring to _ compound with his creditors for 12s 6d in the £1. The many friend" of Mr. Thomas Ball,, J.P., and of Mr. Joseph Hastie, sen,, of Onehunga, will bo pleased to hear that both gentlemen are recovering from their recent serious illnesses.

The death is announced of Mrs. Ann Lizzie Poppe at the age uf 80. The deceased lady has been a resident of Kangitikei for a number of years, and was deservedly respected by all who knew her. The Rev. Samuel Poole, M.A., who was incumbent of St. Peter'.--, Wellington, in the early days, died on tuo 19th instant, at Nelson. After leaving Wellington, he laboured in the Nelson district for many years. He was a very popular clergyman, whose death is widely regretted. Sergeant-Major Kibblewhite, of the Imperial service (India), has arrived in Dunedin to take the place on the South Otago district staff of Sergeant-Major Castle, who has been appointed caretaker of the Garrison Hall.

Mr. R. G. Howell, who has been in the employ of Messrs. Harcourt and Co., Wellington, for the past two years, has been appointed to the position of secretary of the Wellington Gas Company. There were 58 applicants for the position. Mr. Howell, before coming to New Zealand, was for over 10 years in the service of one of the largest banks in England. Mr. H. T. Garratt, who acted as marshal of the procession held in Auckland in con" nection with the Record Reign celebrations, has received from the Mayor a welldeserved recognition of the excellent manner in which the arrangements on Tuesday were carried out. The letter refers to the- admirable manner in which Mr. Garratt carried out his arduous duties as marshal, states that on all sides the complete* success of the arrangements is admitted, and the Mayor concludes by expressing the opinion that it is only meet that Mr. Garratt should receive this welldeserved credit.

A pleasing ceremony took place on Saturday morning at the usual weekly practice of the Auckland Young Ladies' Orchestra. Miss F. Thorpe, conductress, on behalf of the members of the orchestra, presented to Mrs. Hobin Hay, nee Amy Bates, a handsome silver sugar basin, on the occasion of her marriage. In making the presentation Mies Thorpe thanked Mrs. Hay for the valuable services given as pianist, and the genuine interest she had displayed in the working of the • orchestra. Mrs. Hay •:. thanked all those who had been so kind as P to think of her, and said she would long remember their thoughtfulness.
