THE RICH LADY AND THE DIVINE.
A rich lady was in a London omnibus with a considerable sum of money in her purse. Soon a ni'in camo in And ea6 down beside her. She thought of her well-filled purse, and resolved to watch him closely, Suddenly her neighbour put his hand down to his side. She felt it slide until it touched her puree, and instantly she pub out her hand and seized the stranger by the wrist. Hβ did nob struggle, however, and she was perplexed as to what she should do next, hut Him thought that if he should attempt .to gel) away sho could at least show that she had him by the wrist with his hand in her pookoi, Strange to say, she gave no alarm, and so they proceeded for some distance, when, to her amazement, the stranger prepared to riie, "If you lab go my arm, madam," he said, with the utmost coolness, " I shall bo glad to get out here." He half roio as ho spoke, and, to her utter confusion,'|ho lady discovered that hie hand, instead of being in her pocket, was in the pocket of his own ulster, The garment hung down so that his fingers had preued apainst her purse without being in contact! with it, and she held him by the wrist with no eitcuee whatever. She managed ■to stammer out that she had thought his hand to be in her pocket,' while the stranger smiled and went oub. Then a gentleman leaned forward to guy: H Don't you know who that is, madam ?
