STEAMER IN THE GULF.
Captain J. Ddthik, of the Northern Company's steamer lona, which arrived from the Great Barrier early this morning, reports sighting a large passenger steamer hove-to off Tiritiri. The vessel had been observed from the lona in the evening, and was coming up from the eastward, but owing to the thick weather prevailing she could not be made out, On communi--1 eating with the light-keeper at Tiritiri shortly after one o'clock this morning, w« were informed that the steamer was at anchor, bub a further message stated that the vessel had passed out of sight. The Bellinger arrived from Whangarei at three o'clock this morning, and Captain Haultain reports sighting a large nteamor off Tiritiri, evidently at anchor. The surmise is that the Government steamer Tutanekai, which left for the East Coast last night, has put back, owing to the thick weather, and that she is the steamer reported.
