WHO IS TO BE MAYOR!

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — is quite cheering to find that there is public spirit enough left in Auckland to furnish two such excellent candidates for our chief civic position. Before I commit myself to the advocacy of the claim of either of the contestants, I should like to feel sure that the aspirant of my choice would be able to devote as much time to his duties as the importance of the position demands. Now the Hon. W. McCullough has many of the showy qualities that suit the position, but I cannot forget that after spending a considerable amount of energy in obtaining a seatin the Legislative Council, he deserted his post with slight if any apology for other matters that brought more grist to the mill. Now I want to know if in the event of Mr. McCullough's election our city is to receive a modicum of the same cavalierly treatment ? In short how is the honourable gentleman to serve both his country and his city during the coming session? I know the hoo. gentleman is a man of infinite resources, but he has hardly arrived at the smartness of Sir Boyle Roche's bird which could be in two places at the same time; and then if our much deserted country claims the services of her errant senator, who is to step temporarily into the Mayoral breach but our senior councillor, Mr. Dignan ? And I want to know why, for the short period for which the election takes place, Mr. Dignan should not be elected to the position a long way ahead of the poll. Indeed I think, under the circumstances, the contest has not been entered upon in the best of taste. In spite of his ill-health I feel sure Mr. Dignan would fill the office in a manner that would reflect credit on himself and the city.— am, etc., Citizen.
