THE SAN FRANOJ3CO MAIL. ' The Union S. 8. Company are in receipt of cable advices statins thtt tbe mail steamer Mouowai left San Fr»neisoe for Honolulu, Apia, and Auckland, at midnight on Thuriday last, eight hours late. The Monowai ia due at this port on May 20. THE TASMANIA. The Huddart-Parker ateamea Tasmania, Captain Thomaa McGee, arrived from Southern and East Coast porta at 10.45 a.m. yesterday, bringing a large number of paslonger* and a quantity of general cargo, Mr. Knowlea, the purler, reports :—The Tiemania left Dunedin on April 29, and aalled at Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, and Gilborne, leaving the latter port at 11.15 a.m. on the Ist inst, and arriving at above. Variable winds and fine weather prevailed throughout the trip. The Tasmania leaves for Sydney at 5.30 p.m. to-day. THE ANGLIAN. The Huddart-Parker steamer Anglian, having left Sydaey one day late, is not expected to reach this port until to-morrow afternoon. She leaves for East Coast and Southern ports at noon on Wednesday, THE HAWEA.-A FINE STEAMER. The Hawea, the lateat addition to tbe Union 8.8. Company's fleet, arrived from the South on Saturday morning, bringing a large cargo of general produce. The steamer is one of the most complete vessels of hor class which has yet visited this port, and should prove a very serviceable vessel, She has been specially built for cargo carrying, and can stow away iu her holds 2470 tons of dead weight. The Hawea was built by Messrs. A, McMillan and Son. Dumbarton, for tbe Union S.S. Company, and is of the following dimensions :—Length, 260 feet; beam, 36 feet; depth, 24 teet; tonnage, 1114. She is constructed on the cellular bottom principle for water-ballast, and is fitted with rolling ohooks,whioh give her a good deal of ateadf new, and on the voyage out from Glasgow to Port Chalmers proved herself an exceedingly good sea boat. She has a bridge deck and forteastle, On the former is situated the captain's cabin, which is both roomy and comfortably fatted up. On the port side of tho_ main deck are the rooms tor the chief engineer and the deck officers, while on the starboard side are the rooms for the other engineers and the purser. The seamen and firemen have excellent quartern in the forecastle. The aaloonu lituated under the bridgedeok, and, though small, ia neatly fitted up. For the landing and embarking of cargo are four baton ways, a steam winoh being provided for each; also steam windlass and steam steering gear. The engines were constructed by Messrs. Denny and Co., Dumbarton, aud are inverted, direct-acting, surface-condensing, triple-expansion, the cylinders being 17 inches, 23 inches, aud 45J inches, with a stroke of 3 teei, G inohes, and are fitted with Brock's patent valve gear. Steam is supplied from a large multitubular single-ended boiler, carrying a pressure of HOlbstothi square inch. She is fitted with Howden'i aystem of forced draught, which is driven by a special eugine and fan placed in the main engine • room. She is also supplied with Weir'e patent pumps and feed heater, capable of feeding the boiler with water at a bigh temperature against ths full boiler pressure; also, with Caird and Rayner's evaporator, whioh supplies the boiler with fresh water while at lea; Alley and McLellan's patent feed water filter; Brown's combined steam and hydraulic starting engine, for the quick handling of the engines. The engines are capable of driving the vessel at the rate of about 11 knote, when fully loaded, and have worked splendidly on the voyage from Glasgow and up the coast. Captain J. Abram (late of the Poherua) U in command, the other officers being s— Chief, Mr. J. Darling (who brought the steamer out from Glasgow); aecond, Mr. J. Emslie j third, Mr. D. McKay. The engineroom it in charge of Mr. Jamea Dunlop (late of the Wairarapa), who has with him Messrs. R. C. A. McPhail (late Ovalau), and J. Smith, second and thud respectively. Mr, P. Wheeler is purser, and Mr. D. McLaohlan chief steward. The Hawea left Port Chalmers on April 20, and reached the Bluff the next day. Took in cargo, and called at Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington. Left the latter port at 0,38 a.m. on the 29th, and arrived at 7-50 a.m. on Saturday, fine weather being experienced during the passage. The Hawea leaves for Westport tomorrow, and returns to Auckland with a cargo of coal for the Gas Company.

THE MARY HABBROUCK.- ROUGH WEATHER. The Araericau barque Mary Hasbrouck, which arrived at Wellington from New York on Tuesday last, made the voyage in HI days, Captain Wm. Ludwigs is still in command. Tne barque sailed from New York on January 6, and on the 7th she experienced a tremendous pale. A high, confused sea wm runninv, which caused the vesul to labour very heavily. At 8 p.m. the gale was at its height, blowing from N.N.W. with hurrioane force. The vessel behaved splendidly with the protection of four oil-bags along the weather side and bow. At 11 p.m. the vessel made a heavy plunge, carrying away the jibboom in the cap and all attached. This left the foretopgallant mast, (minus the head stays) tottering in the cap, and threatening to oome down, yards and all and endanger the foretop mast and perhaps the foremast head. Things looked very serious, and it was necessary to save the mast and cut away th* wrooked jibboom over the bow, which was acting as a battering ram. It was pitch dark.no moon, and all wore in danger ot injury from falling spare or being washed overboard. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and the crew managed to save the mast and get clear of the wreck before the vessel sustained muoli damage to the bow or copper, Next morning the wind was less violent. When fine weather returned temporary repair* were effected at tea. Favoured by wind and weather, 10 days after the accident all repairs had been executed. She had a good run to the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope, and then she had a remarkably smart passage down to the meridian of Cape Leuwjn, when a itrong northerly gale was experienced with misty weather. She had floe weather, with light northerly wind, after rounding Tasmania on April 15th till reaching Cook Strait, where the was detained several days by unfavourable breezes.
