Showers, accompanied 'by a strong; cold wind, fell during the earlier part of the day. In the afternoon the rain inonaaed to a ateady downpour, the last four raoes being run in lieary raiu. dance was moderate. Hopscotch rcoeired an ovation on beating Nutvhaven, whose want of form was adversely critioiaed. Also started : Newharen and Mnliee. Betting: 2to 1 on Nowhuvcu, 2to 1 against Hopscotch, 20 to 1 the others. Newhaven was left at the post, and Hopscotch adopting his usual tactics, went to the front from the jump, followed by True Blue and Metford. The race resolved itself into Indian tile, excepting that Newlmven ran into fourth place in the straight. Practically no change occurred, the race being won by four lengths; the same distance botween tbe others. Time, lm. I3te. Fifteen horses started. The race w»« run in heavy rain. Englo led to opposite the Leger, where Sabretache Went to the front; but Englo cnme again and won by half-a-leneth. Sabretache was close up. The other starter was Hopscotch. Betting: Even money on Coil, 3 to 1 Hopscotch, 5 to 1 the others. Hopscotch went off with a loug lead, followed liy True Blue, and Battalion piloteq well into the straight. The second tim< found Battalion and Coil came with a rush on the outside. Coil bumped off.
