THE ONEHUNGA WATERWORKS SCHEME.
TO TIIK KDITOR. Sir,—The very modest effusion from "tinwoman who knows her business" regardiug the action of " meu who do not," in this morning's issue is so likely to be estimated at its true worth by all people of sound mind, that but for one of the many untruths therein bein? tho key-note of the war-song suug by the woman (who certainly u'uder- , stands that part of her business), beside being so utterly misleading, it would be beneath notice; but for tho benefit of the pro-perty-owners whom " the woman who knows her business" would so grievously mislead, will yon allow me to explain that the scheme for supplying the water (which is now running to waste) to the Mauukau Water Supply Board, so far from meaning ruin to the pro-perty-owners, will enhance the valne of all property within tho borough except a few hovels in rot and decay, owned by people who do not know their business (or the wretched tenements wonld be in better repair), and which nothing could benefit save perhaps a fire. money to purchase the plant foi pumping, building reservoir, etc., can bi borrowed on the security of the phut itself, and the income derived therefrom. No rate or security from the ratepayers is reqnired ol any kind. The Manukau Water Supply Board will guarantee to take the water iu such quantities and for eucb a term, as will ensure all liabilities connected therewith, being paid off before the term expires; and leave a profit to the borough, and should the supply coutinue after the liabilities are cleared off, so good an income will accrue, that, unless the wants of the place increase marvellously, no further rates need be Daid while the supply continues. Regarding a cry being raised that the Onehunga water is impure, tho Council has already confirmed a by-law abolishing cesspits, and prohibiting women who know that business and others, from burying nightsoil in their backyards, and will continue to take all necessary steps to keep the springs unpolluted, and the water pure; while the Manukan Water Supply Board, knowing that the woman who knows her business will never again be allowed to interfere in the matter, are quite willing to guarantee to take the water from the Onehunga Springs regardless of any cry people who know their business may get up. With reference to Auckland providing a supply of water from Waikato River to Onehunga among other places, Auckland, I am sure, will highly esteem tliis lesson on what is incumbent on them from the woman who knows her business, but evidently doei not know how to mind her own business and let other people alone.—l am, etc., R. Richardson, Town Clerk. Onehunga, March 4,1897.
