IMPROVEMENTS ON THE CABLE SERVICE.
[BY TELEGRAPH,— PRESS ASSOCIATION,] Wakafuaka, Sunday, Tim Eastern Extension Gable Company has fitted one of the cables between Wakapuaka and LaPerouae with duplex instruments ab the cost of over £3000. This step has been rendered necessary by the steady increase of cable work which lms taken place during the laet few months ; and the new depar ture will greatly facilitate transmission of all claesos of messages between Australia and New Zealand. The seb of instruments for the Wakapuaka end arrived from England a tew weeks ago, and are of mapuificent workmanship and finish. They were fitted up by Mr, W. VV. Browning, superintendent) of the company, and Mr. Sknvo, olerk in charge, aad the tests from both ends being satisfactory, the new system was brought into full working order lust week. The unusually smart receipt of the Pres Association's racing messages from Melbourne yesterday was partly due to the use of the duplex system. The ivork of the Cable Company in Mew Zealand has boon steadily increasing of late, and other improvements in connection with the Wakiipuaka station are contemplated in the near future. The work of the Government Telegraph Office here has also correspondingly increased, which has necessitated an addition to the staff.
