Ms. John Stewart, late of the Richmond, has joined Messrs. Leyland, O'Brien and Co.'s steamer Stella as chief engineer, Mr. A. E. Nixon, late manager of the Bank of Australasia at Foxton, has entered into 1 partnership with Mr. E. N. Liffiton, auctioneer, etc., of Wanganui. Hews has been received in Melbourne of the death at Calcutta of John Hayes, a well-known Victorian jockey, and brother Of James Hayes, also a well-known rider!'. Robert Keen, aged 70, and his sister, aged 73, who had lived together continuously since childhood, died at Dayleßford, Victoria, recently within a couple of hours of each other. Captain R. G. Hutton, lata of Messrs. Donald and Edenborough's steamer Richmond, has been appointed chief officer of the Union Company's steamer Tayiuni, Mr. Lake, of the latter steamer, joins the Richmond as chief officer. The Taieri Advocate records the death of Mrs. Christie, of Saddle Hill, a lady who arrived in New Zealand in 1854 by the ship Stately with her husband and 11 children, eight of whom are living, and there are 48 grandchildren and 30 greatgrandchildren. Mr. Thomas Niccol, eldest son of the late Mr. Henry Niccol, shipbuilder, of the North Shore, died at Parramatta; Sydney, on Saturday last, after an illness of several months, at the age of 55 years. Some years ago Mr. T. Niccol left for Australia, taking over the crack yacht Taniwha, and has resided in Sydney sines then. He leaves a wife and two children.
