THE AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S SUMMER MEETING. [BY PHAKTOK.] The excellent acceptances received a fortnieht back for the Auckland Cup, Greas Northern Foal Stakes, Great Northern Derby, and Auckland Steeplechase gave one every confidence in offering the prediction that the approaching Summer Meeting would equal, if not surpass, any previous gatherings held at Ellerslie at this season of the year; and the largeness of the general entries received last week for the minor events of the programme tend to still further strengthen the impression that the A.R.O. will score a very pronounced all round success at the approaching gathering. Matters in connection with the Auckland Cup romain very much in the same position that they were last. week. St. Paul continues to hold his position as favourite for the Cup; and, although some of the coursewatchers are of opiuion that the little son of St. Leger has been showing symptoms _of soreness, I myself incline to the opinion that there is very little fear of his getting to the post on Boxing Day all' right. St. Paul is bonnd to run well. Mahaki lias not been required to exert himself very much, which, of course, tends to the impression that his trainer is afraid to slip the work into the son of Ingomar for fear of cracking him up. Mahaki looks well to aye, and were it not for the fear existing of his failing to stand the necessary winding-up gallops he would undoubtedly bo favourite. Very little has been heard of Fabulist since he returned from It was stated last week that hecontracted intluenzaon the voyage from Lyttelton to Auckland, and was a bit below himself; but, from the fact of his being strongly backed during the past few days, it would seem safe to infer that his condition is pretty good. Pegasus was moving so free and well last week that some were inclined to view his chances in this race with a good deal of favour, but the son of Nelson has displayed symptoms of soreness during the last few days, and I fear that the hard state of the going will find a weak spot in him before the day. Nestor is going on nicely. The son of St. Leger will, I think, stay all right, and he will, I think, run a good race. Mantle and Haria are each doing well in thair work, and the latter his improved of late to such

au extent that it may not be quite safe to leave him out of calculations!. Daystar has been taken to Kohiniarama in order to undergo swimming exercise; but! he ex* hibited such a run-down condition when taken there that I am not prepared to say anything in his until I have ocular proof .that hi is again himself. Epaulet and Mara having only arrived on Thursday, they have not, of course, yet been slackened out, so that is difficult to sum up their respective cbauces at this stage. ■ Epaulet's form shown at Riccarton ana Forbury was undoubtedly very disappointing. In some quarters the son of Medallion is summed up as "an inferior second rater," and if that is a correct estimate of him, then he cannot win the Auckland Cup. It may not, however, be quite safe to write. Epaulet out, for his owner (Mr. Stead) does not as a rule bother with duffers. Mars, who is one of the Hon. Mr. Ormond's lot, has been whispered about as a likely winner; but whatever credentials he holds for a two mile race are entirely of a private nature. He is a five-year-old son of Ingomur and Lyric, and with only a Welter race or two to his credit there is not muoh inducement to favour his chance; still he has the light weight of 6st 91b, and that may assist him to score a victory for the Napier "sportsman. The steeplechase horses Levanter, St. Simon, and ICingswood are all going on nicely in their preparation, and the two former continue to hold their position as favourites for the cross-country race. It is to be hoped that a few soaking showers will fall between now and the day fixed for the running of the cross-country race, or else I fear we shall have some accidents to record. The second payments in connection with the Royal Stakes fell due last week, and with 19 horses still remaining i;i the six furlong rac3, a capital field will in all probability be round at the post on the 3rd of January for that race ; and the meeting of _ Multiform, Dauntless, Tir6, St. Paul, Armilla, Sir Launoelot, and Coronet should be worth a Ion,; journey to witness.
