WAIT AT A COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting VVaitemata. County Council was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. A. Bruce (chairman), Sinclair, Reynolds, O'Neill, Mackay,' Cochran, Wilson, Hatfield, and Mcliwan. The late Chairma^.— Replying to the resolution of the Council, Capt.' MaoMahon wrote as follows:—"In thanking your Council for the very-kind resolution which was passed at your last 'meetiug, a copy of which I beg to 1 acknowledge, it seems like the severence of a life- long connection, instead of one of only a few years' duration. The harmony which has existed amongst the members of the Council, the desire to assist and act justly towards each other, and the general support given to me us chairman, made the duties of that office very light indeed, and I most heartily thank all the members and the officers of the Council for that support, and the members for their generous appreciation of my services." Maiketaiii Roads. reply to Mr. F. D. Fenton's letters to the Council and the press complaining that the tender for works on this read a year ago was not advertised in the papers, Captain McMahon wrote fully on the matter showing that several contractors saw the notice posted,up in the most public place in Helonsville, and that the work was hurried on at the urgent request of Mr. Feuton and his family. That there was only one tender was no fault either of the chairman or the Council. The Council unanimously declared the explanation full and satisfactory, and that Mr. Fenton's complaint was trivial if nob absolutely groundless. . Tenders.—The following tenders were acceptedl. Annual supply of. scoria ash for Takapuna at any point within two miles of the Takapuua Post Office:. 11. X. Burningham, 2s 8d per cubic yard. 2. Supply and delivery of 700 yards of medium scoria for Lake Road, between tho northern boundary of Devonport Borough and Colonel Burton's property: D,ivies and. Carrie, Is lid per cubic yard. • 3. Supply and ,delivery of 250 yards of broken metal to Northcote: Davies and Carrie, 6* 5(1 per yard. " 4. Supply and delivery of 100 yards broken metal to Lucas' Creek : Davies and Carrie, 9s lid per yard. 5. Carting by tho day, Takapuna, Northcote, Birkenhead: Budge and Mackay, single team, 93 9d per day; double team, lis per day. G. Supply and delivery of '200 yds of broken metal on Henderson Valley Road: Thomas Colebrook, 7s per yard. 7. Constructing four culverts and forming road between Waimsuku and Helensvillo: Hugh Fulton, £63. There \\ere no offers to supply the metal required for Waikomiti, and the tenders for forming the new grado on Colonel Burton's road at Takapuna and for constructing a bridge at Mure wai were considered too high, and declined.

Mairetaui Loan.—Tho Auditor-General wrote suggesting that the special rate on which this loan was 'secured should be now levied tor the past t,vo years, and tho proceeds applied to refunding the separate rate account, out of which the interest and sinking fund had hitherto been illegally paid: Referred to the solicitors to report.on at next meeting. _ Applications for Works.—The following requests for works wero considered and i dealt with as noted:—l. Mahony's land, Lucas Creek, to be leased for 21 years, on conditions to be drawn up by the county solicitors. 2. Martin's Road, Upper Waiwera. Tenders to be called for a new bridge at an estimated cost of £43. 3. Roacj between Waiuui and Cooper's Plat. The deviation suggested by Mr. A. Bartley and others to b» adopted, and the owners of land through whose properties the new road will pass be asked to give the land. 4. The deviation offered by Mr. Scruby in Upper Waiwera to_ be adopted and surveyed by the engineer. 5. The application by Messrs. Grant for new pipe culverts at Orc.va, and the survey of Mackie's road, Hiiia, to be deferred till next meeting, 6. Hellycr's bridge, Parakakiiu, Mr. Hollyer to have £6 in addition to the grant from the local Board. 7. The embankment on Deacon's road, Kumeu, to be repaired. 8. New culverts to be constructed as requested by Mr. A. Buckland on Mairetah'i road. 9. Mr. Brown's offer to clear 90 ohains of road through the Museum endowment at Woodhill at Is per chain to be accepted. 10. The Railway Department to be allowed to construct ditch across the road naar Mr. Monk's property, Woodhill. 11. Tender? to bo dulled for repairing Vos's road, Taupaki, and for a new bridge over the Kumeu-Waimauku road. 12. The Waikoukou bridge and approaches repaired. Special Grants.— was resolved that the engineer furnish, at next meeting, a scheme for the expenditure of these grants, in Wainui, Waikomiti, Hum, and Waitnkerei, for the approval of the Government and the Council. Dou Tax.—Mr. H. Evans was appointed ' Registrar for the whole County, for the enSuing year. Arrears of Rras.-It was resolved to enforce the 10 per cent, penalty on all overdue rates, and to .sue all defaulters after next meeting. _____________
