AUCKLAND TECHNICAL SCHOOL ASSOCIATION.
The annual meeting of the Auckland Technical ■cal School Association took place last even ' ing, at the rooms of the Association, Rutland . street. There were present: Professoi 1 Brown, Hon. W. Jeunings, Mr. J. J. Hoi • land, AI.H.R., Rev. P. \V. Runcimat ! (Registrar of Auckland University), Messrs, ' Geo, Eraser, Gray (of Cook and Gray), E. . Bartley, H. G Wade, 'I'hos, Herbert, W, ■ Fowler, and J. H. Mackie (secretary), ■ There was not a single member of the geneI ral public present, in addition to those who were either members of the Council or officers ■ of the Association. Mr. Holland was called 1 to preside. THE REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. The Secretary read tho report and balance- ' sheet, but space will not permit of giving the 1 report. The accounts for the year ending 1 80th November last showed that the total receipts, including balancp carried forward, 1 £263 lis 3d, amounted to £793 lis lid, and 1 after defraying expenses there was at that date a balance in hand of £2015s 6d. The Chairman moved tho adoption of the report and balanceisheet,. The reply of the Board of Education to the appeal to take over the School and maintain it was very disappointing. They stated it would involve £500 a ysar, and that they had not the means. Tho motion was carried. The Rev, 1), W. Runcimau read the report of the Finance Commitee „ Your committee have the honour to report thw tile balance in hand at the end of the present year I] £220 lfis 6d. 'l'hore has been a deficit during thfl year of £42 10s 9d. There are accounts oustandinjj to the value of about £30, so that the real deScienci . for the >o*r is about £*2, (be balance at the end of last year having been £m 6s 3d. The income for next year may be estimated as miliarGovernment grant, £81); foes, £248: total, £326. The expendi. turn may be estimated as follows Caretaker and secretary, £100; salaries, £816; printing, £27 rent, £90; taxes, £2; sundries, £35: total, £670. This would leave a deficiency of £244, and as less ■ than £200 will be available, it is evident that the - financial position of the Association demands the (iiost. serious consideration. The Education Board having declined lo take over the school, it ii ■ apparent th.it unless additional funds are provided, either by Government or by private generosity, th| Work of the Association cannot be carried on much longer. Ou tho motion of Mr. Peacock this state* mont was incorporated with the report. The Rev. D. W. Runciman then moved the following resolution That this meeting deeply regrets that the Auckland Board or education has not followed the enlightened example of the Boards of Education at Wellington and Wangamii, and taken over the direction of technical education in this city, especially as it appear* (I) that it is impossible without their assistance to carry ou the present Technical School, which is admitted to be doing good work in the community, and .''2) further becauso the reason assigned , tor. not taking over the school is inadequate, as it proceeds upon an entire misapprehension of the facts of the case." He (Nlr. Runciinan) thought the Board of Education was under an entire misapprehension; instead of requiring to give £§PO, it would only need to give about half thai; amount. His motion was not intended to be disrespectful, but it was necessary to take empnatio notice of the Board's letter. Professor Brown said the attitude of tho Board was incomprehensible, for technical education was of the first importance. Tho Wellington Board of Education last year expended over £1700 on technical education. The motion was unanimously carried, after a general discussion, in whioh the Hon. W. Jennings, and Messrs. Peacocke, Wade, Herbert, and others took part. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following were elected for the ensuing year President. Sir Maurice O'Rorko; vice-president, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. Boardinan); members of Council, Hftu. T. •Thompson, Hon. .W. - Jennings, Professor Brown, Rev. D. W. Runciman, Messrs. J. J. Holland, E. Bartley, Geo, Eraser, F. Fowler, Thos. Herbert, H. G. Wade.
