Sxbil (Whangamata). — Another large body of quartz has been discovered in Ibis property, from whioh a fair prospect of gold is obtainable by pounding, Moa (Whangaraata)-Several new reefs have been recently uncovered in this mine, and during the past week some of the directors visited the property and took away with them samples of the ore for assay purposes. ,■ V % Warden's Office.—Six applications only were lodged at tho .Warden's offloe this week for special olalms, and the amount of money lodged on their behalf, together with additional deposits on account of previous applications, totallod £183 lis 9J, ' , Flkmisoton (Whangumata).—The work carried on in this mine latterly has been chiefly directed to the general exploration of the 9urfaoe with tranches for the purpose of. dhoovering the whereabouts of other lodes that are supposed to exist in the property, and from which the loose quartz boulders came that are scattered all over the surface, but as yet nothing of much importance has been found. Thamrs HAURAKi-The tender of Mr. James Hawkes for the supply of 1000 loads of gravel at 5s per load, and the tender of Mr. Wm. Ashby for supplying 1000 loads of spawls at 4s Bd, all of which id to be used in connection with the foundations for the new pumping and winding plant, have boen accepted, ai.d the contractors have commenced to deliver the material at the mine. Adelaide. -Excellent progress has been made during the past week in opening up the main reef, a total length of about 24 feet having been driven upon its course. In both drives— and south—the reef narrowed down to small dimensions during ■the early part of the week, but it has since opened out to about a foot in thickness, and colours of gold have been seen pretty freely in the quartz broken, especially in the southern drive, where there is considerable improvement noticeable. Ocoidkntal.-A crushing of 19 loads of general dirt was completed for this company to-day for a return of 350z lOdwb of reported gold. The quartz treated v/m obtained from No. 1 leader in the atopes above the North Star level and from a winze sunk to ft depth of about 30 feet beneath the same level, the leader in question avoraging about six inches in thickness. At the present time operations are boing confined to opening up an intermediate level upon the leader at the bottom of the winze, bub should the prospects prove sufficiently encouraging it is probable that steps will be taken to interaeot the same leader at the company's low level from whioh point about 250 feet of backs will be available.

"■" GOLD SHIPMENT. The Bank of New Zealand forwarded to San Francisco by the mail steamer Mariposa on Saturday, II boxes, containing 35 bars of gold, weighing 11,8740z, and valued at £60,100.

OCCIDENTAL. Nineteen loads of ore takcu from the Occidental Gold Mining Company's mine yielded 350z lOdwt retorted gold.

CRITERION. Twenty-three cwt of quartz from the Criterion mine, treated at the Moanataiari Company's battery, yielded 9ozßdwt retorted gold. Previous crushing of hrgor parcels some few months ago gave 13oz anil'lOoz to the ton.

WAITAIA. A cablegram has been received advising the payment of money expended in working the mine since July 2,1896. ... •

ANGLO-NEW ZEALAND MINES IN- _ VESTMENT CO., LIMITED. This company has just taken the option for 320 acres, including the Broken Hill Proprietary, Myra, Melbourne, and Dandy special claims, situated due north of the Broken Hill property at Tairua, at present under option to Messrs. Seaver Brothers. The option is for nix months, and is couched in most favourable terms. The Anglo Company has also just concluded arrangements for an important option over the Waitekauri No. 2 Gold Mining Company's property, particulars of which were announced in Saturday's Herald. Other important options are under consideration by this company, wnich it will be seen is actively at work, and is in process of amalgamation with a wealthy London syndicate just forming a company to take over the whole of the Anglo-New Zealand Company's operations. Mr. W. J. Stokes, the managing director, is now in London, and cable advices reooired from him state that negotiations to this end are progressing favourably. , GENERAL MINING ITEMS. The mine manager of the Waitokauri Reefs wired on Saturday that the reef recently reported is looking well, and improves as worked on. Good prospects can be got by pounding. On Saturday the scrutineers announced that the ballot had resulted in the election of Colonel Barton and Messrs. T. H. Keesing and Win. Gorrie to the office ot directors to the Hauraki North Company. The voting was as follows:— Burton, 49,400; Gorrie, 45,926: Keesine, 46,637; McCormlck, 42,873; Lecky, 42,086; Vines, 42,266; Smith, 5,800. . SOUTHERN MINING. . r B7. TELEGRAPH.— ASSOCIATION. J Grkvmodtu, Saturday, The rich gold bearing beach at Barrytown is about to be worked by Messrs, Fandel, Duncan, and Shury, of Ashburton, who have taken up 200 acres, and intend putting the necessary plant on to work. The sand has been prospected from one end to the other by practical miners and a mining engineer, who, from tests, show tho ground to be marvellously rich. It is intended to work with a blow-up," and tho lucky proprietors have secured abundant water-rights. The ground is situated at tho famous Barrytown range. Prospecting drive in the -Golden Fletwo section: The country we are going through isa sptendid class of sandstone. Nonpareil (Thames, November 2,1).— have made a fair start with on: bottom level. Queensland level: The reef at present Is a bit plnchel, but shows signs of opening out' again. During the week some nice colours of gold were seen in the small veins runnin: in the footwall. Crescent (Karangahake, November Orient section : The reef in this section Is now about two feet six Inches in width, and well defined. Renown (Waiomo, November a).-Outcrop of quartz: on opening it out it moved to be a reef about four feet wide, of a rubbiy nat ire, and Is of low grade. Also tried a leader about one foot thick. This is a very hard atone, and contains a little fine gold. Asteroid (Owharoa, November 23).— cut a soft head in the drive, and there is a good drop of water coming out of it. Pukewhau (Oororaandal, November El).—The crosscut' The reef is six inches thick, and when breaking it down on Friday I saw colours of gold in the stone. •— Waiiii Consols (Waihl, Novembor 21).—The ground in the crosscut keeps about the same; there are still small quartz veins crossing the face. MAUGK(iConnedy's Bay, November 21). —The reef is looking well, and has widened considerably, being now a solid body of quarts of about six feel. A large quantity of ore is now to hand in the paddock, lam this week sending jewt of ore to town for assay. Ranoatira (November 23).-In the low level the country is very bard. There Is every indication of a change soon. Sinking on the reef, Still gel ting ;tood quartz. Cadman (Kennedy's Cay). — Cadman leader: Better results than hitherto. - The Ivador has come back to its usual size, eight - inches and (he country is more solid, having been rather disturbed owing to its close proximity to the creek. Really splendid prospects of coarse gold are obtained by washing, and gold can be very freely seen in the stone. A.J.O. reef: We have cut through this reef and it proves to be a splendid body of stone between six and seven feet thick.

Prince op Waihi (Waihl, November 21). -Passim; through brown •andstone anil boulders, the last few feet being much firmer, from which there is a considerable quantity of water flowing. South urn CROSS (Coromandel. November 20).The crosscut : The country still continues same character.

Pandora (Owharoa, November 21).-No. 2 level: Country becoming more solid. No. 3 level: Country excels anything I have met with in any other part of the mine, and water is coming freely from the face. Have one man putting In prospecting drives in the prominent spurs towards the extended section, some very nice loose quartz obtained, Maritana (Owharoa, November 21).-No. 8 level: During the l-<st few feet a change of country has taken place, it being a nice white sandstone full of quartz seams and carrying a little gold ; splendid flow of water coming from the face.
