THE MARIPOSA.' The mail steamer Mariposa, Captain H. M. Hay ward, arrived at 5.30 a.m. on Nov. 5, from San Francisco, Honolulu, and Apia, bringing the English and American mails. The voyage was a very pleasant one, until two days oat from Apia, when bad weather was met with. Notwithstanding this the steamer made excellent progress, and landed her mails well in advance of contract time. , The passenger list both for New Zealand and Australia is a very full one. and ' the cargo consists of 1970 tons, 3/0 ' tons of which' are for New Zealand ports, and the balance for Australia. - Mr. Thomas Smith, the purser, to whom we are indebted for our tiles and despatches, reports The Mariposa left San Franaisco at 5 p.m 011 October 15, and reached Honolulu at 8 a.m. era the 22nd. After a. stay of 12 hours the voyage was resumed, and Apia Harbour made at 4.30 p.m. on 'the '29tli. ' Resumed - the voyage at 6.30 p.m. the same date, and arrived as above. Fiue weather prevailed until the Ist instant, when strong southerly winds and head seas were experienced to arrival. The Mariposa proceeded on to Sydney the same evening.

moderately, strong S.E. winds for 24 hours after passing Kandavu' followed by bright weather with pleasant S.E. breeze to arrival. THE RICHMOND. I' Messrs. Donald and Edenborough's steamer Richmond, Captain R. G. HnWqn,-arrived from Tahiti and Rarotonga at six o clock on Monday morning with a large cargo of copra, pearlshell, fruit, etc. The steamer has made very good time on the rouud trip. lwng fully, a day ahead of the time she was expected. The following is an account of' the. round trip .—The Richmond left Auckland on October 30th, and after a fair weather passage arrived at Kara tonga at daybreak on the 6th jnst. Left the same day, and after calling at Atiu, Mauki, and Raiatea, arrival at Tahiti on the 9th. Left Tahiti on the 10th, and called at Raiatea; Mauki, Atiu, and A'itn-. taki, and arrived at Rarotonga on the 15th.. Left for Auckland on the 16th, am( experienced tresh breezes from the, south j and south-west till arrival as above. v./, A VESSEL IN DISTRESS. rt , ; " The Richmoud brings intelligence that the brigantine Salvador, bound from Astoria to Callao with a cargo of timber, tint into Tahiti on the 2nd instant in a lesky condition. The master ot the vessel reports having met with very heavy weather during the voyage, which caused her to work and strain badly. The vessel being' found to make considerable* water, it was decided' to bear up for Tahiti, the crew beiiig constantly at the pumps to keep her afloat. On arrival the cargo was 'discharged, and when the Richmond left the captain of the Salvador was awaiting instructions from his owners as to what course to pursue under the circumstances. ACCIDENT TO THE FIONA. The Union Company's steamer Upolu, brings intelligence that the Colonial. Sugar Refining Company's steamer Fiona, whilst proceeding from B* to Labasa. got' on the reef off Vatia Point, about 12 miles from Ba. It was early morning at the time that the accident took place; and the Fiona was towed off by the Pukaki, and did not suffer any damage as she afterwards proceeded to Labasa to load for Auckland, On Monday the barque Delta arrived at the Kaipara from Wellington to load timber for the United Kingdom. . • H.M.S. Penguin arrived at Sitva on the 11th inst, from a surveying cruise.' Theßhip comes on to Auckland shortly. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Rakaia will probably come- up to this port to take in wool, etc., for' London shortly. SHIPPING SUMMARY. Business in shipping circles during the past month has been fairly active.. ..The movements of vessels in and out of the port have been as followsOn November. 2 the barnuentine Adelaide arrived from Newcastle with a cargo of coal, and is now loading timber at Mercury Bay for Sydney. On the 4th the Union Company's steamer Corinna arrived from tho'Eastern Pacific with copra, pearlshell, fruit, etc. The mail steamer Mariposa arrived from San Francisco on the sth with the English and American, mails, well iu advance of contract date. On the 6th the Union Company's ste'imer Taupo left for the Eastern Pacific, and is due back on Sunday next. The American barque Alice sailed on the 6th for Wellington' to complete her loading of flax for Boston. ' The Union Company steamer. Upolu left for Fiji on the 7th and returned on the 23rd with the largest cargo of fruit ever brought from that group by one vessel. The Shaw, Sarill, and Albion' Company's Himalaya -sailed for London on the 7th with a full general cargo. The same date the -three-masted schooner Ysabel sailed on a cruise to. the Friendly Group and Nine. On the Bth the New Zealand Shipping Company's Tongariro arrived from London with a large general cargo, the whole of which was consigned to Auckland. She left for Southern ports on the 13th to complete her loading for London. The Tyser Liner, Star of England, arrived from London and Australian ports on the 10th, and is now loading in the-South for London. The Same date the Union Company's steamer Rakanoa arrived from Fiji with a large oargo of sugar, and left, on the 16th for Newcastle, • Singapore, and Calcutta, whence she returns, to New Zealand with a cargo 'of eastern produce. On the 12th the Union Company's steamerTavinni arrived from Sydney, and the Islands, and left again for the same ports on the 18th. The barque Devonport arrived from Newcastle on the 15th and is now loading timber at the Thames for Melbourne. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Rangatira was docked for cleaning and painting in Calliope Dock, aud after taking in wool, kauri gum, etc.,- left for the South on the 2lst to complete her loading for London. The American barque Spartan arrived from New York, via IJnnedin, on the '20th, with a part cargo-of general merchandise, which has since- been discharged, and the vessel is now loading for New York with kauri gum and will sail next | week. On the 21st the barque Regent- Murray sailed for Dunedin to load for London. Messrs. Donald and Euenborongh's steamer Richmond arrived from the Eastern Pacific on'the 23rd, and leaves for tho 'same ports again to-day. The barque 1 Silver Stream is now on her way from Otngo :to - load • for London under charter to- the New Zealand Shipping Company. Next week the Tyaor liner Star of .New Zealand, arrives-at this port from London and Australia, and on discharge proceeds South to'complete her loading for London. Sintyli fell from aloft, breaking one .lib-legs m two places, and also one arm, besides sustaining internal injuries. He died-the next day, and was buried at sea. '• ;v ••< ACCIDENT TO THE AUCKLAND." Dunkdin. November 3.—' _ Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's ship Auckland, Captain James, from Glasgow, came into port to-day. As she was being towed lip a fierce S.W. squall struck her, and the;tug .'being unable to hold her, the anchor w;tS let go. but before it could pull her up, the vessel's stern touched. .11' sand, bank. Another trig was sent from the port, but a "succession.'of squalls which occurred before hitfh 'water rendered it impossible to tow the ship off.
