WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The annual meeting of the Wasteraata County Council was held at the County office on Wednesday. There were present: Messrs. Sinclair, Mackay, Bruce, Wilson, O'Neill, Hatfield, Reynolds, and the two new members, Messrs. McEwen and Cochran, Chairmak.—On the motion of Mr. O'Neill, seconded, by Mr. A Wilson, Mr. A. Bruce was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr. Mackay moved," That a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the late chairman. Captain MaoMahon, J.P., for bis zealous and painstaking efforts aschairman of the Council for the past three years." This was carried by acclamation. Finance Committee. — Messrs. Bruce, Wilson, Mackay, and Cochran were appointed a finance Committee. ; Mairetahi Riding Loan.— After some discussion, the question of levying the special rate to provide tor the interest and sinking fund of the £1000 loan for the Mairetahi Riding, or charging tbe same on the general fund ot the county, was adjourned till next meeting. Charitable Aid,—ln reply t» the circular from the Taranaki Hospital Board,' it was resolved, on the motion of Mr, Sinclair, to approve of the proposal to charge upon the consolidated fund the whole cost of hospital and charitable aid, so as to east the burden, not upon land only, but on Customs duties and income tax, in order that all classes of the commnnity might share the cost. Waikomiti - West Coast Road. — Mr. John Castlo wrote calling attention to the damage to this road caused by the timber traffic, and enclosing an extract from the Naw Zealand Herald of the previous day, After some discussion it was resolved to make temporary repairs, and defer the question of damage by the traction engines till next meeting Works Authorised, — The following works were authorised :— 1. Repairs to Shaw's Road, Waikomiti. 2. New culvert on Orewa Road (Messrs, Grut Bros.). 3. New bridge at Murewai, Waitnauku (fresh tenders), 4. New culvert* on Portage Road, between Constitution Hill and Slaten's (fresh tenders). 5. Swaiison-Wcst Coast Road, general repairs, 0. Pipeclaying a section of Dairy Plat Road (Mr. Hatfield). 7. Repairs by contract on Woodhilland Te Pua Road, Mairetahi Riding (Mr. McEwen), 8. Metalling Kaukapakapa Village roads, 250y<la gravel (Mr. Sinclair), Tenders.-Mr. G. A, Goulter's tender of £18 for for removing slips off Kelly's Road was accepted, and it wui resolved that tenders for the usual metalling contracts in each riding bo called for, returnable at next meeting, and that each member send to the engineer a list of works, whether from out of special grants or ordinary revenue, which it is desirable to carry out in each riding during the summer months. Applications Deferred —The following requests were deferred till next meeting owing to the absence of the engimeer, who met with an accident a few days ago(1) Mr. G. A. Gribbin, for Mr. A. Mackie, to have the road through his land at Brooklyn surveyed and defined; (2) Messrs. Gillies and Colbeok, for Mrs. Cavan, for £15 compensation, for land taken for a road at Brooklyn; (3) Mr. H. E. Martin, Upper Waiwera, for completion of a road and erection of a bridge as pur agreement with the Conncil when the roads were exchanged; (4) Mr. A Jack, jun., for repairs to Waterloo bridge and Dunn's bridge, Waiuui. Accounts.— monthly accounts, amounting to £135, were passed for payment. The treasurer announcod that the overdraft had been wiped out, and that there was a balance of about £250 to credit of the Council. Mr. Sinclair stated that this result was owing to levying the rates three months earlier than formerly, which hid thorn funds in hand at the beginning instead of the_ end of the summer. The cost of doing this (£10) had been many times saved in the reduction of interest on the overdraft, which bad, for the present at any rate, disappeared.
