An extraordinary general meeting of the Victoria Gold Mining Company was held yesterday afternoon at the Chamber of Mines, Mr. G. S. Kissling presiding. Mr. J. J. Macky read the advertisement, explaining the object of the meeting, namely, to rescind a former resolution and empower the directors to sell the property. The Chairman explained that the directors did not disagree on the terms arranged at the meeting on the 20th March, but the conditions prescribed in the resolution then passed were such that the directors were not able to make a satisfactory sale. ' This meeting was therefore called for the purpose of rescinding the resolution then passed m order that the directors might be empowered to dispose of the company's property to the best advantage. He moved, "That the resolutions passed at a meeting of shareholders, held on the 20th day of March, 1896; authorising the directors of the company to sell and dispose of the property on the terras stated in such resolution be and the same is hereby rescinded." Mr. J. Batger seconded the motion, and explained that the. directors did not propose to sell on less terms than were proposed at the meeting of the 28th March, but they had lost the opportunity of selling on better terms, for if they did not sell on the terms prescribed in the resolution, they could net sell at all. . The motion was carried. The Chairman then proposed, "That the directors be empowered to sell and dispose of the company's property on such terms as they thought fit." It was seconded by Mr. Nathan. An amendment was moved by Mr. Court, "That the directors be empowered to sell and dispose of the company's property conditional on their submitting terms of sale to the shareholders prior to the completion of the contract, ■ and that a bare majority does not signify objection to the terms of sale. : ' It was pointed out that such a proviso would prevent any negotiations, The amendment, after some discussion, was lost, and the motion was carried as proposed. _

GENERAL MINING ITEMS. Mr. John Pascoe, miuiug export to the African Austral Mining Syndicate, has arrived in Auckland for the purpose of acting with Mr. Leo M. Myers as to investments in New Zealand mining properties. Our Paeroa correspondent writes in answer to the letter of Mr. Grey about the Sterling mine, but it is unnecessary to publish his letter m extenso. The difference of statement as to the width of the reef arises from the peculiar class of country, for Mr. White considers the conglomerate formation accompanying the body of quartz in question all reef. Our correspondent says.—"lt is, of course, bard to say what the formation may develop into, for T it undoubtedly carries a lot of quartz. Yesterday, when I called at the mine, it seemed to be coming up very strong from the bottom of -the level, while the 18-inch vein of quartz had also widened out considerably." Mr. James Slator, architect, draftsman, etc., of Queen-street, will publish a map of Ohinemuri mining areas this Tuesday morning. It shows the Marototo, part of Wires, Waitekauri, Karangahake, Owharoa, Waihi, and intermediate districts, and is the most comprehensive map yet published. It was lithographed at the Herald office.

Gladys (Kuaotunu, April 25).-The winze: The reef continues about the same. The leader in the south end of main crosscut is only about four inches, and prospects equal to 2ozper ton. , Waitaia (Kuaotunu, April 24).—Drive going north: The reef formation is from 12 to 18 inches in width, consisting of quartz stringers and country intermixed. Have started driving in the south face of Barrett's level. Fair crushing dirt is coming to hand from this end, although the leader is small in the face of drive. Princess May (Manaia, April 24)— Struck a two-inch leader of fine-looking compact ore, about two feet apart from the hanging, wall lode, with which it is connected by a stringer .carrying gold. I obtained some stone showing good colours of gold on the floor near the spot where the first lot of picked stone was procured, and where we are sinking the winze. CIIELT (Waitekauri, April 22).—Low level is passing through a good channel of sandstone country. Maori Dream (Kuaotunu, April 20).— The crosscut: The ground is not so favourable as it was for gold. Tho crosscut for the new reef has been driven through splendid sandstone country. " Golden Spor (Waitekauri, April 25).— The reef last discovered is at present about 18 inches in width, and its appearance is very encouraging. Good-looking stone has been obtained from it. Ajax (Kuaotunu, April 24).-No. 3 reef carries a small prospect by pounding. I have cut some small leaders with varying success ; on occasions I will get a little gold. Midas (Kuaotunu, April 25).—Main low level: Still penetrating a beautiful class of sandstone country, interlaced with iron veins. Grace Darling (Waitekauri, April 24).— The reef in the face is a fine body of stone from five to six feet in thickness. The hangingwall portion give very fair prospects of loose gold, and the stone when pounded shows a nice tail ot gold in the dish. Portsea (Waitekauri, April .24).—Low level. The reef still maintains its dimensions being about 12 feet. • ■ .'! Juno (Kuaotunu, April 25).—Country is much the same as usual. A portion of the footwall of the lode is being saved for treat-, ment. Footwall portion: Reef being one foot six inches in thickness and very failquality. t The first intermediate south face: The leading stope over this has been continued on a 2:feet lode, all of which is good. The fourth scope north, of the rise: On,au 18inch lode, quality of which is good. North end of mine: Lode from 18 inches to four feet thick; the ore obtained is of low grade quality. The winze extension: Portions give fair results, and the whole of reef is sent to mill for treatment. Cut. in the joint low level So far as can be ascertained at the present time the size of the lode is about three feet in width. Several parcels, 'been pounded and washed and one and all gave prospects of gold, some being much better than portions I am now sending to 'the mill from our upper workings. Yesterday the quartz began to come in. - ' The ore crushed during this week has been low grade. The lode where cut in drive is about 3 feet thick, and looks like opening out in both directions. Tried several samples ■'. with mortar and dish and got some fairly good prospects of gold." • ;.<■:. - ■• Golden Link (Kuaotunu, April 25).—N0. 1 leader has been very poor, although it has made much larger in size. The new reef that we started to work on last week has got much larger, and is now a fine compact lodo 7 feet wide. Have picked up the reef on. the boundary known as the Little Hell reef.
