BOROUGH COUNCILS.
v NEWTON. The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held last night, there being, present: Mr. S. Ambury (in the chair), and Messrs. Lee, Warnook, Davenport, and Donald. The Foreman of Works reported that the drainage work in Princes-streeb was nearing completion, only two more chains of pipes remaining do be laid. The reporb > was received. It was decided that in view of the unnecessary waste of water in the borough, the turncock be instructed to waib upon the ratepayers with a view to arranging for more careful use of the water, and to reporb upon the service generally. On the motion of Mr. Davenport ib was decided that the Legal Committee be instructed ,to institute inquiries into the question of levying license fees on travelling shows exhibiting on Surrey Hills, there being ab present no by-law by which the borough can levy such fees or rates. The committee to report to Council un same. The Streets Committee was instructed to report upon the necessity of a lamp being erected in Queen-street. Accounts amount■ing to £49 2s lid were passed for payment. Mr. Warnock drew the attention of the Council to the necessity.of clearing away an overgrowth of tea-tree and weeds on a section of Richmond Avenue, and it was decided that : the Streets Committee take the necessary steps to have the overgrowth cleared. •■ ',"•■■ ■»,
PARNELL. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held-last night, Mr. Spencer Von Sturmer (Mayor) presiding. \ There were present: V Mrs. Matson, Messrs. Savage, Thornes, Page, Whitley, Briggg, McDonnell, Thomas, and Wrighb. Several formal applications as to alterations of the Burgess Roll were dealt with. Mr. James Stewart), C.E., wrote in regard- to the Order-in-Council for tramways, and intimating that ; all, charges would be paid by him. Messrs. Hesketh arid Richmond suggested that -Mr. T. F. . Martin, of Wellington, should be authorised to approve of certain alterations in the order, as in the case iof Auckland. The Mayor said' the suggestion was in the direction of public safety, and he moved that' Mr. Martin bo appointed. This was agreed' to. Dr. Pabst reported three cases of typhoid fever in the. borough. Dr. Mackellar reported on the : sanitary condition of Eldonstreet and Brighton Road. The question of drainage was referred to the Streets Committee, and it was resolved that in accordance with recommendation of the medical officer of health the Council call on the city authorities to institute a thorough inspection of the dairies, etc., from whence the milk- supply-of Eldon-street is drawn. The question : of the removal of refuse was allowed to stand over. A considerable amount of routine, business wasdealb with, and reports were received from the foreman of works and the inspector of nuisances.
